Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
Maybe in another life, my love?
That’s what she was thinking of, but she answered him in a dispassionate tone, “yeah, this is nice.”
“So … what were you doing a month ago, Ms. Miller? Clearly you didn’t have Hawaii in your plans, then?”
Andrew Green seems intent on making conversation. Which makes this whole thing feel even stranger.
“No I didn’t. I was doing simple things. Visiting with friends, family,” she replied, remaining distant. If he was recording this, any voice analysis would show that what she just said had been true, based on the facts.
She turned to him to ask her own questions, before he could ask her anything else. Miller didn’t know what he was up to, but she wanted to at least be able to control some part of the conversation. And get him to talk.
“And you? What were you doing a month ago?”
He snorted, and then shrugged his shoulders. “Business stuff, here and there.”
“Hardly ever just “business stuff” with you, though, Mr Green,” she rejoined quickly.
He laughed, “You’re right. My business is serious stuff. Gold always has been that – serious stuff , that is.”
Miller’s eyebrows knit together. “Gold? As in the metal? Back when we first encountered each other, you were in the financial markets side of things, weren’t you?”
“I was forced in that direction, yes. Because there was a core group in this gold collective that had been muscling everybody out of the metals side. I had to turn to financial markets to build up my capital to finance my mining and other activities so that I could compete with them.”
He paused to finish off his drink. Miller shook her head quickly when he asked if she wanted to refill hers.
He stood and walked to a wet bar built into the wall unit across one end of a sofa behind the captain’s chair. He continued as he poured himself a double shot of scotch, “Ironically, one of the collective, Peter Hegel, had a grandfather who became my father’s business partner. So it felt to me at the time I was being muscled out that this stupid collective was so ruthless that it thought nothing of elbowing out even one of their own.”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
