Chapter XXXII – Empire State of Mind – Dive
Apart from the three tonnes in Hawaii, Bette decoded from his notes that Philip had the bulk of the gold moved to old salt mines in the border between the old Prussia and Austria. The land the mines were located in had originally been owned by Lady Beatrice’s husband. Years later, Philip’s grandfather had purchased the land from Lady Beatrice’s family. Philip’s grandfather was planning to locate a manufacturing facility in that land, but ended up abandoning those plans. Philip inherited the land when his father passed.
Bette knew that Lady Beatrice had been one of the original members of the team that had taken the gold from a master criminal, Mr. Pimms, in 1855, after the man had stolen the gold during an audacious robbery along the London rail. The gold had been destined for Paris, but Mr Pimms and his crew had maneuvered to steal it; and it had been stolen, in turn, from him by Captain John Alderbrook, Lady Beatrice’s brother, his friend, and Lady Beatrice. The trio had also taken the rest of the gold cache Mr. Pimms had accumulated through illegal means during his trips overseas.
Later on, John managed to insert the gold in the shipment of his things bound for New York, where he had been planning to relocate. Their friend Edward Harranby, who’d worked in Scotland Yard, and who’d recruited John to help him with his task to blunt Mr. Pimms’ plans concerning the gold, had been brutally executed by Mr. Pimms. Before that happened, Edward had written to Lady Beatrice to advise her and John about what to do, in case something happened to him, to ensure that the gold would be kept away from either Mr. Pimms’ crew or other criminals who could come to know of the gold cache’s existence.
When John moved back to England, once it became clear that New York would soon be ensnared in a war between the states, he and Lady Beatrice decided that they would move the gold to their parents’ estate outside of London first. They’d heard rumors that Mr Pimms’ associates were still looking for the gold, years later after the event, and after Mr. Pimms had been hanged for his crimes.
Lady Beatrice and John planned to eventually move the gold to the salt mines, which were going to be shut down. Lady Beatrice’ husband had been shot in a duel of honor and she’d inherited the property after he’d passed from his wounds. Before the salt mines were shut down, she had secure strongholds made of metal installed in sections of the mines, explaining that it was a precautionary measure to ensure that the mines would not collapse in the interim after they shut the mines down as Europe lurched into conflict.

‘It could turn out to be a fatal mistake’ is the intriguing tempting sentence and then 21 pages later we’re still wondering!
Great Story over it’s many twists and turns and another great chapter. Thank you looking forward to 33.
Indeed still wondering about that sentence.
It is a very good and intriguing story, so many happens and it keeps you captivated to the end.
I like all appreciate the beauty of Brete, I like Tom drooling over Bette, Tina presume I like his love Bette, please keep writing and indulging with your stories, thank you very much!
I bet those fishing shops have nice little pointy knives…the kind you can strap to….well – where ever you can hide one ! The girls have to win ! Mr Green with the lead pipe in the library ! Get that snake off her path !
Love your story and look forward to every twist! I don’t even try to guess where you’re going, but just hang on for the bumpy ride. I’m probably in the minority, but I can’t stomach Tom! He is so inappropriate and disrespectful. A peeping Tom that doesn’t bother to hide in the bushes. At least Ashley called him out on his behavior. Cannot imagine Tina allowing him to be their donor and Bette allowing him to continually ogle her. Don’t imagine Bette would tolerate Miller acting that way towards Tina. Can’t wait for the next chapter.
Hi, am glad you are enjoying the story, and thanks for telling me what you think. Several thoughts in response: 1) the Bette in this storyline is an inveterate flirt, something that Tina has had problems with from the start ( see early chapters in “Let It Happen” and a few chapters in “Love Soul Heaven Hell), yet she believes she’s in control of it… we’ll see; 2) all the same, she is insanely devoted to Tina; 3) and Tina feels the same. But still, there was a point when they were questioning their expectations about the other (in their own ways; in “Let It Happen”). I have to say I once wrote out a couple of chapters that threw into that (crazy) mix an issue, sexual fluidity, that seems highly relevant to people. Or maybe fluidity expressed in various ways — one chapter that was going into “Let It Happen” after they broke up, and another for “Love Soul Heaven Hell” after the chapter on cheating), that explored those issues in an interlocking way. The chapters were interesting, and took the storyline in unexpected directions, but they each didn’t fit into the flow of the books, so I ended up shelving them. I may pick up on them again, because I think the topic is… well, topical!
In the meantime, I hope Tom doesn’t turn you completely off the rest of the story. (Maybe you can give him a break … don’t we all have those male friends who we know we won’t end up dating but like playing with, anyway?) :-) hope you enjoy the rest of the ride.
ok, from the fishing shop Miller gets a box cutter to be detected by Green’s detector which gives him a feeling of being clever. She also gets 2 or 3 large plastic cable ties, makes great restraints, some plastic fishing line that can be wrapped around the neck, easy and a lot of praying! Excellent chapter. Keep going!!!! PLEASE.
I do not like all this charm
Tom play Bette, ok! He and his friend
only he does not bother to hide
Tina how much he deseha his wife.
Changing the subject I like the pace

decorer details about the narrative.
