Chapter XXII – Empire State of Mind – Knife’s Edge

A piece of the torn picture fluttered out of the envelope into Jules’ hand.

    Fuck, Tina!  What the hell!

Jules sent Tina an iMessage quickly.  “Are u back?”

After half a minute, she got a response back.  “Yes. Caught an early flight bak.”

“M with Bette in The:Core. U need to come here asap.”

“Sure. Will tell V. Ask if it’s safe.”

    “Hurry.  Bette needs you.”

    “What happened?”

“She got a picture and report about you and a dude.  In bed.”

    “WHAT?”

    “Just hurry.”

Tina didn’t respond after that.  So Jules sent Diane an iMessage also.

“Serious shit betw B & T. Need your help here.”

    “What happened?!”

“Tina & a dude. B was sent a pic of them. In bed.”

    “WHAT?”

    “Pls just get here, baby.”

“There in 30, babe. Keep B calm. Watch her heart.”

    “I know.”

Bette interrupted her, as she stepped up next to Jules, sucking air.  She bent over, leaning on her knees, as she asked, “who are you talking to?

    “D,” Jules responded, truthfully.

“Well, I’m done,” Bette said as she straightened up. “I’m stretching and then hitting the showers.”

“Umm… did you want to grab some dinner after?” Jules asked, and then added, after some hesitation, “talk about it?”

Bette walked to the mat and laid a towel down.  She began stretching her tired limbs on the floor.  “You mean about the report?”

“Yes, Bette!” Jules asked, unable to hide the surprise from her voice, as she sat on the mat next to Bette.  “Of course about the report!  What else?”

Bette continued stretching, and didn’t respond to Jules.

Finally, as she sat up wearily, wiping her face and her arms, “I have to believe it’s a fake, Jules.”

Jules observed her in wonderment.   Bette really was a cool customer.   That picture and report would have reduced me to a quivering mess, had that been about Diane.  Yet, here was Bette.  Refocused after having worked out her tension.

Was she just holding it all in?

She followed Bette into the locker room, asking her questions from time to time, just to check on how her friend was faring, mentally and emotionally.

“Are you following me into the shower?” Bette asked as she stripped and wrapped herself with a towel.  She shot Jules a wry smile as she stopped to pick up another towel from the bunch of fresh towels rolled up and arranged like a pyramid on top of a dresser against a wall in the locker room.

    1. Jodie? Scott? Who doctored the photo? More twists and turns. I’m glad Bette is letting Tina deal with this distraction so she can break the code. Keep the girls safe. Thank you for continuing to post this wonderful story. Your efforts and time devoted to this site is very most appreciated.

    2. I’m trying to read: Chapter XXII-Empire State of Mind-the edge of the knife. Unfortunately, pops up the message: not found, error 404. I don’t know what to do to read that story.
