Chapter XVII – Empire State of Mind – Rescue

Jenna observed the back and forth about Bette between Diane and Brom, and the obvious concern they’d shared for the brunette.  They’d been frantic earlier, when they all got the news about the catamaran crash, and were told Bette had been missing from amongst those who’d been rescued from the sea.

Earlier, while the three of them were in the top deck, Brom and Diane had explained that Bette needed to divert people’s attention from Tina, and they explained that they thought Bette pretending to have an affair with Jenna would do that effectively.

As she continued to process what Brom and Diane had asked her to consider,  Jenna’s thoughts floated back to a time when she and Bette were sitting in the bar of the hotel Bette had been staying in.

She’d asked Bette, a bit tipsily, “So.  After everything that’s happened between you and Tina, do you still believe in love?”

Bette had smiled, and answered wistfully, “My heart’s tired, Jenna.  I guess, right now, I believe in loving the one you’re with.”

Jenna had smiled, observed hopefully, “That’s good.”

“I guess,” Bette had responded, and then drained her drink and bade Jenna goodnight, then headed up to her room.

Later, when she and Bette had said what Jenna had thought at the time were their final goodbyes, when she’d tried to talk Bette into staying, Bette had smiled, again, and firmly but gently, told her they didn’t have a future.  Not the way Jenna wanted, at least.

Yet, years later, here they were.  Bette needing her help.  To pretend to have an affair with the brunette, of all things – a future of a sort, after all.

     What did Brom say earlier?

“Is this coincidence or is this the way life happens?”

Brom and Diane were observing Jenna, who was obviously still thinking deeply about what they’d asked her earlier.

Brom prompted her quietly, “So, Jenna.  What do you think?”

She bit her lower lip, and ran a finger absentmindedly over her top lip.

Diane said, “Look, let me text Tina and ask her what she thinks.”

Earlier, as Brom continued to talk to Jenna, after they’d surprised the former redhead with their unexpected request, Diane had called Tina to broach the idea, explaining that it was just a “Plan B” at that point, which Brom had also supported.

    1. Jenna better not remotely think that she will have really have a chance with Bette. Tina will not pretend to rip her heart out. She will do it very slowly as Jenna watches. So Peter is the white knight? I’m not so convinced but she has to trust someone in this mess. Keep posting. Thank you

      • swell, now I need a scorecard to tell the players apart. Which one is actually the “white knight” and who is “the wolf in sheep clothing”? Please keep writing and I will use a pencil to fill in my “box score”!!

        • Thanks for keeping score — I can see from the commentary that people are itching to “hit the long ball.” Will be pumping in a few fastballs shortly to oblige.

By the way, how do you think this “Fall Classic” ends? Curious. :-)
