Chapter XXVII – Empire State of Mind – An Equal and Opposite Reaction

“We know you’re still well-respected amongst experts we’ve talked to and you could be our answer, so if you decide to change your mind, call me. This number, 24×7, I’ll take the call.”
Soon after, Jackson Hunt, one of core senior partners of a large law firm that catered to “family offices,” and Peter’s key adviser, ended the call he’d been on for the last half hour. He absentmindedly tapped his phone on his forehead as he walked toward the loose circle of guests Peter was chatting with.
Peter had been looking in Jackson’s direction while his adviser talked in a secluded area of the long hall that led to the living room where Peter and his guests had gathered. When he saw Jackson walking towards him, he knew Jackson had probably found someone who could help them respond to what had happened to Bette in the tunnels. Peter caught the man’s eye and nudged his head imperceptibly to the right, signaling to Jackson that they could talk in the darkened library next to the large living room.
Peter was entertaining this evening in his equestrian estate in Virginia’s bucolic “horse country.” He had invited many of the important donors to the charities benefiting from the proceeds raised by the annual charity polo matches he and Brom had participated in earlier that day. The money raised this year had broken all previous records for the event so Peter thought he could thank the main donors appropriately through an impromptu gathering in his estate following the last match of the day. He was friends with many of those who’d accepted his invitation and most had decided to delay their outbound flights to enjoy some downtime with their otherwise reclusive host. And many couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to talk shop with him.
Many had joked that this was finally their chance to find out what lay behind his unprecedented string of outsized returns from investment bets he’d made (“no one’s that lucky!”) over the past five-six years.
Two of the women flanking him on either side, in particular, were peppering him with questions about how he’d been able to get in as a core investor of the Chinese internet firm planning to launch its IPO in September. Word on the Street was that the Chinese firm’s IPO had all the makings of a legendary stock launch and most of Wall Street and other investors were elbowing each other for as much of the stock they could get from the block of shares the Chinese firm was planning to unload via the IPO. Everyone was trying to pull strings with their brokers to get them in a favorable position to grab shares because many analysts expected the stock’s price would spike once the stock launched. Due to rumors that the initial available block of shares would be limited, the Street’s consensus was that high demand for the limited shares to be made available could easily lead this launch to be the biggest IPO in years. And Peter stood to gain a windfall from his holdings in the firm because he was one of the initial core investors in the firm, and was rumored to be putting up a significant percentage of his holdings up for sale via the IPO.

Wow Jules and Diane are not Bette and Tina but that was so hot! There are so many twists and turns and you never really know who to trust. I love it! Thanks for posting.
I’ve spent the last three weeks reading “Let It Happen”, “Love Soul Heaven Hell” and “Empire State of Mind”. I’m a sucker for a good love story and an even bigger one for a love story with mystery, action, and intrigue. I particularly enjoy FanFIction when the author takes the characters in directions different from the original series. I’ve enjoyed how Bette turns out to be some business genius, who is sought after by the world’s movers and shakers. Yet, despite her enormous success in the business world, art still plays and important role in her life, and her life with Tina. I am riveted by the connection between Bette and Tina throughout these stories. Despite their rocky start, their connection remains the axis upon which these stories revolve around. They’ve weathered former suiters, art thieves, fighting factions in a war zone, greedy gold thieves, and rogue intelligence agents, and their connection seems to grow stronger and stronger.
I also enjoy how you keep tying earlier scenes to the current plot line. It’s as if the first two stories laid out all the puzzle pieces and in the third story, we get to see how Bette finally puts all those pieces together. Clever, quite clever. I have a sneaking suspicion that her rescuer, Harry, from the caves, will eventually play a role in wrapping up this gold mystery. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out and whether you have another sequel planned for us. You have some crazy, mad skills as a writer, and I hope you continue to share those skills with your readers.

Welcome back Sky!! I was wondering what was happening with Tom. I hope the antidote will work for him. His Mom did I want a legacy for him( yes I know his legacy is Tina and Bette’s baby). Is the mystery killer the woman that Tom’s mom contacted. Philby has to be stopped. Glad to see Bette and Brom make up. Diane and Jules have to get married. Diane has to trust her heart. Jules only wants her. I love all the intrigue and backstory. Bette and Tina would be the best guardians for the gold and Peter’s fortune. Their big hearts and giving souls would make them the true protectors of the world. Keep this marvelous story coming with all its twists and turns. I love it!!
Oh my, I was blessed with 32 pages of bliss. My reward for threatening the life of his first born if, my computer tech could not fix my computer, in a timely manner. He was instructed to fix it now or die trying. Discussion on phone that could have started an International incident. But, he did, and I read and reread my reward. Very much worth probably the beginning of WWIII! The episode is amazing and everything is coming together as a good novelist desires. Maybe, Diane should speak with Tina about jumping into forever with J. Tina had somewhat of the same concerns as Diane. And look how well that turned out! Please keep writing and I will try not to threaten the life of anyone else!
