Chapter XIII – Empire State of Mind – Making Gold Disappear

“I also have the information on the letters of credit used by the consignees. They’re all in a file in my office somewhere,” he added.

“Hmm…” Bette said, still tracing imaginary patterns on the glass.

Tycho raised his head, “Umm… I can get my files for you, if you’d like. I have copies in my house.”

Bette gave him a casual shrug, as if to say, wouldn’t hurt.

He checked his watch. At this hour, traffic would be extremely light, and it wouldn’t take long, 20 minutes tops, to get to his place, and then get back to Bette.

“Look, the most damaging information to me and my firm, is telling you that we were significantly affected by all this, that combined with other things, nearly caused us to shut down.”

He frowned, “Not a good thing for our clients or counterparties to know. I can tell you that we are far healthier today. But we were in a pretty bad spot back in 2008.”

Bette gave him a small smile, at last, and assured him, “Of course it isn’t something that I would talk about with others, Tycho. So don’t worry.”

He stood, and smiled back. “Okay, I’ll go get my file, then.”

He quick-walked to the door, then turned and asked, as he opened the door “Anything else you need?”

Bette fixed him a long look. She asked slowly, “Yes. Can you tell me who is after me?”

He frowned, then answered, “I will. I’ll get the file, and tell you all about that part of it when I get back.”

Tina, New York (the previous night)

George stood to greet Tina with a big grin as he spied her working her way through the hushed dining room of the Michelin 3-starred restaurant in the Time Warner center building overlooking Central park, exclaiming loudly, “Here she is at last!”

He shrugged at the diners in the other tables near his, mouthing, “I’m sorry,” as they turned to look at him.

He walked around the tables to head towards the blonde.  ”Sexy and beautiful as ever,” he declared with a rakish grin as he neared her opening his arms for an embrace.

Tina responded, as she stepped into his open arms, “Hey, didn’t I used to know you?”

    Comments

    1. I hope Tina won’t make a rash decision and quit her job. I am afraid she will lose her sense of identity and cause problems in their marriage. Please keep Bette and Tina safe and their marriage strong.

    2. Thanks! I’m with the others! NO drama in their marriage and please keep them safe but let Bette figure out the gold issue. I pray Bette has it and they are rich beyond what they can imagine. Tina can then BUY the studio and work only if she wants. PPS

    3. What a tale, Sky! I love the intrigue and the references to every day issues. You have managed to make numbers exciting. Please keep Bette safe as she unravels the secrets. I want her to return to Tina and their babies unharmed. I hope Tina waits until the dust is settled before she makes any decisions about her job. I think their will a great monetary foundation for her to manage if Bette cracks the code. Thank you for the time and effort you devote to this site. Please post again soon.
