Chapter 7
Tina smiles and nods again.
(Tina) Alice mentioned she’s touring at the moment, when will she be back?
(Bette) Next week. She has some performances in LA. Depending on what’s going on by then we could go and see her
They look at the other a little awkwardly and then both have a sip of wine. Tina clears her throat and continues.
(Tina) And you’re close?
(Bette nods) Very. She’s a great support to me, and I hope me to her also
(Tina smiles) I’m sure that’s the case
They smile at each other.
They spend the afternoon continuing to meander through the town and spend time browsing in various character heavy shops, Tina enjoying the familiar mix of vintage, antique and book stores scattered throughout the streets.
Later, they make the drive back to the city and Bette pulls the car over outside Alice’s apartment building, and they turn to each other.
(Tina) Thank you for today. I loved it
(Bette smiles) I’m glad. I loved it too
They each reach for the other’s hand and continue looking at one another. Tina eventually smiles and looks away.
(Tina) Hmmm, I should go before I forget myself
(Bette smiles) OK
Tina reaches for her handbag at her feet and rifles through it for her keys. She glances at Bette with a smile.
(Tina) I think I should get some credit for toning things down though. I haven’t called you baby once, all day
(Bette laughs) I noticed that actually
Tina examines her for a moment and smiles.
(Tina) Hmmm, I think you like it when I say it
Bette laughs and looks over at her with a smile.
(Bette) Don’t undo all of your good work today Tee
Tina laughs and they smile at each other.
(Tina) I do like you calling me Tee
They both continue smiling, and having found her keys Tina leans in and kisses her on the cheek. She leans back and they look at each other.
Bette rolls her eyes with a smile.
(Bette) You can say it
(Tina smiles) Thanks baby
They both laugh and then hold each other’s gaze for another moment. Tina reaches for her hand, giving it an affectionate squeeze.
(Tina) I really do appreciate today. It means a lot to me
(Bette smiles) I’m really glad you enjoyed it
They continue looking at one another, Tina holding her hand tightly as Bette gently strokes Tina’s with her thumb.
(Tina) Well, bye I guess
(Bette smiles) Bye
They share a smile as Tina steps out of the car.

This is achingly sad, and a masterclass in writing.
Hi again, katynd! :) I’ve been buried in paperwork these past few weeks but I’ve been following this interesting story from the very beginning. This has a different emotional terrain from your other stories and I applaud you for exploring these deeper landscapes. It’s like Tina went back to a default setting when she and Bette were still so in love and can’t keep their hands off each other. One wonders what series of terrible things happened that broke them apart but I hope Tina won’t be so devastated once she starts remembering them (hopefully she won’t recall every hurtful detail) and that she’ll be able to look at them from a different perspective. I hope Bette will see things from a different lens too.
Can’t wait to find out what happens next! As always, thanks a lot for writing and sharing this interesting, well-written story, katynd!❤ (Thanks also for your concern post-hurricane!:D)
Loved it!
