Chapter 58 – Tall Drink of Water

The rest of the girls just laughed at Angus’s shiver.

“Okay, enough about my horrible office experience.” Bette finally said.

She walked back inside and grabbed her briefcase from her office. Setting it on the picnic table, she opened it and retrieved the documents she signed earlier this afternoon.

“I made my first investment with the bonus I have yet to receive until next week.” Bette handed the paperwork to Kit.

    “Retainer agreement?” Kit read aloud.

“I may not have secured you guys an agent yet, but you now have an entertainment lawyer representing your guys’ interests.”

    “Really? Who?” asked Carmen.

    “Joyce Wischnia.”

“Oh yeah, she’s pretty big in the biz.” Alice remarked. “Used to represent all sorts of big name celebs and settled huge litigations against the gossip rags who printed a buncha trash about her clients.”

“You mean those trashy paparazzi magazines you can’t seem to get enough of?” Kit eyeballed Alice as she teased.

“What? Come on, who doesn’t love a good rumor and innuendo about the celebs we all love to hate?”

    “Me!” Everyone chanted in response.

Alice narrowed her eyes. “Liars! All of you!” she proclaimed.

“Anyhow, she reviewed the agency contract and the venue deal for next Tuesday.”

“What did she say?” Angus inquired.

“She advised us not to sign with the agency until some modifications to the agreement are made and that the performance agreement looked pretty standard with Spaceland, so we can sign it if we want.”

“Cool. But, who’s gonna break it to Jodi?” Shane asked.

“Oh, that’s been taken care of too.” Bette smirked.

    “What’s her number?”

    “Here you go.”

    “Great.”

Dial tone on speaker phone, followed by seven brief tones.

    Rrrrrrring. Rrrrrrring. Click.

    “Hello?”

“Hi, may I speak with Jodi Lerner please?”

    “This is Jodi Lerner.”

“Hello Ms. Lerner, Joyce Wischnia. How the hell are ya?”

“I’m doing well Ms. Wischnia. What, uh, what can I do for you today?”

“Well, there are a few things you can do for me today if you feel so inclined, my dear. But let’s try to keep this professional, shall we?” Joyce laughed heartily at her own joke while Bette smiled at the same time she quirked her brow. “I’m sitting here with the manager and kid sister of music’s most elusive R&B-Pop queen of the early 90’s going over your garrulous narrative you call an agency contract and I’m wonderin’ how many poor schmucks have actually signed this wordy piece of fertilizer to be your proverbial bitches so that you can whore them out to the consuming masses?”

    1. This was an eye opener for me. I knew the entertainment industry was corrupt but I didn’t know how the fine print details in the contracts screwed the performers so badly. Agents are greedy and evil. This story has been educating as well as enjoyable. Thanks for the information and an interesting story.

      • Hi Jane!

Glad you are learning some new stuff. Some of it is a little fictionalized, but I tried to keep it as true to life as possible. But agents are known for their sliminess so I think I got that right ????

    2. One more thing on football. I used to go to Rams games at the old Coliseum and Pat Haden was QB . I paid $15.00 for a seat. I hope the Rams win as I hate the Patriots. I’m a Jets fan. JETS=Just End The Season ????????????????

      • Never heard that acronym for the Jets, but I’m totally stealing it LOL!

I’d LOVE to pay $15.00 for a seat to ANY pro sports game. It’s so cost-prohibitive these days!

    3. Don’t understand references to American football.

      Love Joyce !!

Hate Jodi (did in the Show too)

Love your writing and this Story – thanks for the 6 Chapters, have a good week :-)

      • Jodi definitely causes some very intense and passionate feelings from readers. You’re not missing much when it comes to American football. It’s a pretty barbaric sport. Fun to bet on though. ????

    4. Nice set of chapters. Thanks so much! Not a fan of Jodi, love Angus’ humor! I hope Tina just tells Little P the whole story. Truth is always easier to deal with. What is up with the Krolls?

    5. I’m with Angus: I wish my pizza delivery girl greeted my like that, too. Well, I wish my pizza would be delivered by a girl in the first place ;-)

Those two are just too hot.

Great chapter, MeLL. I had a very entertaining week with your story.

    6. Wow, I would have LOVE to be the pizza delivery girl – or anything else, by the way – for Bette tall-drink-of-water Porter ! Dear author, being a french-spoken Swiss girl, I just learn this ‘tall drink of water’ expression right now, thanks to you, and I adore it !
… as I adore your story I discovered a week ago and have read with delight since today !!
      Thanks a lot ! :-)

      • Hi T_B! Glad I could teach you some of our weird American phrases. I’m also very happy you have found my story and are enjoying it. A little more than halfway through our story so I do hope you’re in it for the long haul!
