Ch. 2: Brief Encounter in Wonderland

“Bloody marvelous,” Helena sighed, staring at the ceiling.

All Bette could do was smile. Helena looked at her.

“Come here,” Helena said with a glint in her eyes.

Bette followed. They lay face to face, but it wasn’t nearly close enough for Helena. She pulled Bette closer until there was nothing between them. She kissed Bette, tasting her sweetness on Bette’s lips, her hand roaming around for a crack in Bette’s suit of armor. Bette put her arms around Helena. They remained in that contented position for one timeless minute until at last, Helena bit her lip with the excitement of a kid with the last golden ticket. She had finally managed to get her hand under Bette’s shirt and wasn’t wasting anytime in finding her way under Bette’s waist band.

Bette stopped her and jerked away.

    “What’s wrong?” Helena asked.

“You don’t have to,” Bette began.

“I want to. You have no idea.”

Tempting as it was, just by the look on Helena’s lustful smile, something was stopping Bette from surrendering herself.

Helena looked at her inquisitively. A flash of emotion ran across Bette’s eyes. Fleeting as it was, Helena saw it.

“I have to go, um. The… Jesus. The Chinese food. I forgot. I’ll put it away.” Bette said quickly as she rose from the bed.

“Yeah, right. Did, did I do something?” Helena asked, dissapointed.

“No. You’re fine.” Bette said as she picked up the bags of Chinese food, trying not to look at her. “I’ll just get these in the fridge before they spoil.”

“Can I assist you?” Helena asked, hoping Bette would understand that she meant something else other than putting the food away.

“I got it. I’ll just put this away now.” With that, Bette was out of the room.

    Alice’s kitchen…

Bette cooled herself in front of the open fridge and took a swig of water. Shit, she thought to herself.

Helena walks by, wrapped in bedsheets.

“I forgot. My clothes are over there.” Helena said, pointing at her luggage in the living room.

Bette watched as Helena picked up her things and began to head back to Alice’s room.

    “Well, I’m off to bed.”

    “Good night, Helena.”

Helena begins to go but stops herself, “Do you want the bedroom?”

Bette, struck by Helena’s offer, “You got here first. First come first serve.”

They both chuckle a little at the inadvertent pun.

“I mean, you know,” Bette tries to recover, her face, barely straight.

“It’s just that, I’ve slept on that God forsaken sofa over there. It’s not the most comfortable… Are you sure?” Helena persists.

“That’s generous of you for the trade offer, but-”

“I never mentioned anything about trading.”

Bette goes a little red, “I’m tired. It’s just-”

“We can just sleep. I promise to keep my hands to myself.” Helena says. Bette nods to her.

    Alice’s bedroom…

Bette, already in her pajamas, enters only to find the room vacant; Helena’s luggage on the floor, opened. The contents inside all look like men’s clothes. “Helena?”

“I’m in here,” Helena says, emerging from the closet. She’s wearing Alice’s pajama pants, which look a little short on her. She also has Alice’s favorite shirt on.

“Can you believe it? I’ve got wrong bag!”

“I can see that. I’m sure if you call the airport tomorrow, they can straighten this thing out.” Bette notices Helena’s shirt. “Nice shirt. I presume from Alice’s closet?”

“Yeah, it’s quite comfortable, actually. What’s that?” Helena asked, catching Bette smile to herself.

“Nothing. Which side do you sleep in?”

    “Which ever side is free.”

    “Really?” Bette asks, surprised.

“Yes, it’s part of my charm.”

    They stand awkwardly.

“You know, I’m still a little buzzed.” Bette confesses.

    “Me too.”

“I think we should sleep it off.”

    “Yes, agreed.” Helena replies.

They stand silently for a moment.

Helena breaks the silence, “Actually, I’m a bit famished. Care to join me?”

    “Lead the way.”

    1. This yummy encounter was just the tonic I needed after Helena’s jarringly abrupt departure on the show. After Bette and Helena sleep off their whiskey binge, I hope they finish what they started!
