Can’t Help Falling In Love – Chapter Five

Bette walked into her house and she saw her husband sitting at the table reading the paper.

“Hello honey.” He said, smiling. Bette didn’t return his smile.

“Hey. Diego, I have to talk to you…” She told him. She felt so bad about this but it had to happen.

He put his paper down and had worry in his eyes. Bette sat across of him. “What is wrong?” He asked.

“I… I’m not happy anymore.” Bette said. So, that was straight to the point. He looked shocked.

“What do you mean? Do you want to have another job? Do you want to move?” He asked, panicking a little. Bette sighed.

“No, I… look, I’ve met someone else.” Bette said.

“Who is he?!” Diego yelled and stood up.

“Diego! Calm down! This is not helping!” Bette yelled.

Diego took a few deep breaths and sat back down. He asked calmly. “Who… is… he?”

“It’s not a he, Diego. It’s a woman.” Bette said.

Diego looked shocked. “You… you met… a woman? You have fallen in love… with a woman?”

    “Yes.” Bette answered.

“What did I do?” He asked, almost crying.

“Diego, you didn’t do anything wrong. Every woman would be happy to have you but… I’m not that woman.” Bette said, hurting because he was hurting.

“Are you gay, Bette? Are you a lesbian?” He asked.

“I don’t know, Diego.” Bette answered honestly. “I only know I’m not straight.”

“Bette, I love you. I love you so much. I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want to lose you.” He said, tears rolling down his cheeks.

“Diego, I care about you but… I don’t love you. I love someone else.” Bette said.

“Have you fucked her?” He asked, his voice as cold as ice.

Bette sighed. “No, I haven’t even kissed her.”

“You leave me for something you don’t even know?” He asked, almost laughing at her.

“This is not about that. She and I are close, very close, we talked about what we feel for each other and she feels the same for me. We agreed to not act on those feelings until I talked to you.”

“Wow, that’s friendly.” Diego said, rolling his teary eyes.

“What do you want me to do, Diego? Stay with you but don’t love you? Stay unhappy?” Bette questioned.
