    Breaking silence

Tina tossed and turned in bed, trying to get comfortable physically as well as emotionally. She had been a little off, a little distracted, ever since Bette brought up her parents that morning, and she still couldnt seem to shake the vague sense of dread that the conversation awakened in her.

Ever since her father died, Bette had gotten nostalgic and sentimental about the importance of family. She and Kit had become even closer as a result, and Tina was certain that it served to further fortify Bettes commitment to her and Jordan, as well. All of that was good and perfectly natural. But Melvins death had also started Bette thinking about how wonderful it would be for Jordan”for all of them”if Tina were to reconnect and reconcile with her own parents. And Tina was hearing none of it. It was as if Bette had donned a very thick pair of rose colored glasses, or was stricken with selective amnesia. What else could explain her wifes willful self-delusions when she was so well aware how terribly small minded Tinas parents were?

Surely Bette remembered the near apocalyptic fallout when Tina told her mother that she and Bette were lovers. Her mothers intolerance and coldness had rocked Tina to her core, broken her heart, and forced her to make a choice between her familys acceptance and her love for Bette. She chose Bette, grieved her loss, and, severed ties with her parents. Tina was not typically an absolutist. In fact, of the two of them, she was much more likely to see things in gray scale whereas Bette tended to paint the world in bold swaths of black and white. But for Tina, there hadnt been any halfway or compromise with this issue. It was her identity and her integrity on the line, and it didnt feel like there was a middle ground.

Quietly, slowly, Tina eased her way out of bed, picked up her robe from the chair, and crept down the hall to the nursery. Leaning over the crib, Tina smiled down at her baby girl. Jordan slept soundly, long, slender fingers curled against her palms, black lashes resting like butterflies against her flawless mocha skin, her chest rising and falling with each steady breath. Tina recognized the shape of her own ears and eyes in miniature, faint echoes of her parents features.

Be happy, Jordan. Live well and love deeply and I will always be proud of you, Tina whispered, lightly brushing her fingertips through her daughters chestnut tresses.

Did she wake up? Bette asked quietly, wrapping her arms around Tinas waist from behind, nuzzling her neck.

No. I did, Tina said, turning to rest her head on Bettes shoulder.

    Are you okay?

    Just thinking. About my parents.

I dont mean to push, Baby. I know its more complicated than picking up the phone after all this time.

Tina nodded wordlessly. She suddenly felt very tired and overwhelmed, and couldnt quite bring herself to consider or sort through the maelstrom of memories and emotions flooding through her. She sagged in Bettes arms, sighing.

Lets go back to bed, Bette said, kissing her eyes. Well talk more later.

And Tina took Bette’s hand and allowed her wife to lead her to their room and into the coccoon of her safe, warm embrace.
