    Breaking silence

Tina stirred the next morning, reaching for Bette beside her and finding only cool, empty sheets.  A few minutes later, she wandered into the kitchen and discovered her wife sitting on the floor with Jordan, stacking brightly colored blocks into towers.

“Hey,” Tina said softly, brushing her fingers through Bette’s hair as she crouched down.

“Morning,” Bette said, greeting Tina with a kiss.

“How are my two most favorite people in the whole world?” Tina asked, kissing first Bette and then her daughter.

“We were wondering the same about you,” Bette said.

“Thanks for letting me sleep in.”

“You were completely exhausted.”  Bette rose to pour Tina some coffee.

“Thanks for that, too,” Tina smiled, looking up.

“How are you feeling this morning?”

“Better.  Less…muddled.”  She accepted the mug that Bette offered and took a sip.

    “Good.”

“I…um…I’ve been thinking.  And I’d like to bounce a few ideas around with you.”

    “Okay.”

Tina exhaled slowly and leaned back against the kitchen cabinets, making room for Jordan to crawl into her lap, and Bette sat next to her on the floor.

“What if, instead of all of us meeting my parents at the same time, I see them first. Alone.”

Bette’s face clouded with worry.  “T. I don’t know.  If you’re this worried about seeing them””

“Hold on.  I think I’m worried because there’s so much that’s still unresolved.  Between them and me.  And bringing you and Jordan into the middle of that, without trying to put any kind of closure on the past, feels really…it’s like covering over a mess instead of cleaning it up.”

    “So…”

“So I’ll have dinner with them by myself.  We’ll meet at their hotel.  We can talk and do some sorting.  And if that works out, the three of us will see them for brunch the next day.”

“And you’re okay with that?”  Bette asked, frowning.

Tina nodded, kissing the top of her daughter’s head.  “I need to be sure this is the right thing for us before we jump into it.  And if I don’t feel comfortable, it’s better to know that sooner rather than later, isn’t it?”

“What if I came with you to dinner?”

“Baby,” Tina said, touching Bette’s cheek.  “You can’t protect me from everything all of the time.”

    “Why?” Bette asked stubbornly.

“Do you know how much I love you?”

“I could sit at a separate table and watch.  Then if things started to get tense, you could give me a signal, and…”

Tina tugged on the front of Bette’s t-shirt, drawing her in for a kiss.

“I think I can handle one dinner with my parents.  I had dinner with them every night for 17 years, you know.”

“I feel like I pushed you into this.  I wanted you”.”

Tina shook her head.  “No.  Maybe at first I was doing it for you and the baby.  But not now.  This is…this is something I want to do.  One way or another I need to settle this with my mom and dad.  For myself.  And hopefully it’s going to work out so that Jordan has a new grandma and a grandpa.”

Bette scooped Jordan into a hug, blowing a raspberry on the perfectly smooth skin of her stomach.  “I understand.  And it makes sense.  But I…”

“You want to make sure I don’t get hurt,” Tina said gently.  “I know.  I used to feel the same way every time Melvin came into town.”

“Families are very complicated,” Bette sighed.

    “Ours isn’t,” Tina said.

    2. family is complicate but we cant live without it only if its really impossible then i hope Tina try to get close to her parents again she is a family person..and i can bet Bette will be in this dinner without Tina notice..lol.great chapter :o)

    3. a breath of clear, crisp clean air, reading your stories. is there any possible way to read, comfort enough. ive heard its brilliant. i would dearly love to read it. please let me know. you are awesome. thanks.

    4. One page, half a page, 10 pages…. you have not disappointed. Don’t know the reason for your withdrawing your other story but it sounds like there’s a whole new/& old group of readers who would like the chance to (re)read it. Your version would comfort many who were disappointed with what was dished out during S2. Please continue.

    5. I just got back from vacation and found all these new chapters from you – what a delight! Love this story and the way you tell it. Thanks for returning to us and sharing your talent.

    6. To quote Luther Vandross:
      “Never too much.
      Never too much
      Never too much…”

I suppose you subscribe to the dictum, ‘always leave them wanting more’???

    7. FFC,
You have done it again; made the simplest of conversations a piece of art.
This chapter is wonderfully realized as Tina, after the security of Bette arms, sorts out her thoughts and emotions then honestly tells Bette her plan of action. I love the way Bette tries to protect Tina by suggesting that she would sit at another table. This had me rolling in the aisles as I really could imagine Bette saying that and then trying to get Tina to agree.
Tina response was perfect. There are times when you need to face the fear and do it anyway. This often means doing it alone. You have captured one of these times flawlessly.
It is down to your talent and flair how easy this story rattles along and gives immense pleasure to its readers.
Thank you for sharing this gift with me.
Please post soon as I want to know what happens next.
Will there be a happy reunion or a final farewell?
      Only you have the solution.
      Your Loyal Fan.

    8. Another great chapter. It’s good that Tina takes things at her own pace, and that Bette isn’t too insistent on deciding how Tina should handle things. Love the pace, but would love more chapters. (smile)

    9. “Baby,” Tina said, touching Bette’s cheek. “You can’t protect me from everything all of the time.”

      “Why?” Bette asked stubbornly.

I love Knight in Shining Armor Bette!! *Sigh* Soo romantic. It’s a great idea for Tina to sort things out with her parents first. I can’t wait to see how things turn out. Thanks, ffc!
