Bliss From Tragedy – Chapter 9

Tina felt Bette coming toward her and met her eyes when she looked up at her. She saw Bette the way she did yesterday, she wanted nothing more than to just be there for her. While her mind thought this, she saw Bette not moving, frozen in what was their eyes locking, but then something more. Tina didn’t hesitate at smoothly getting up and brushing Bette’s side, lightly putting her arm around Bette’s waist as the walking seemed to continue.

Tina spoke as they got outside, ” Bette, what’s going on?”

” I don’t know T, just don’t leave me,” she got out slowly coming back to reality.

They walked toward Bette’s car, so they could make their way to the gravesite. Neither of them spoke, their silence said it all

Bette pulled herself together enough to drive, it seemed that seeing was a little clearer with Tina there. Bette was so overcome with emotion she really didn’t know what to do. She had lost a dear friend and the grief was something that she couldn’t bare, she hated that Rachel had to end so tragically. She was a ball of confusion and weakness, the worst being she made herself vulnerable to a complete stranger. Oddly enough she found solace in Tina’s presence, comfort in the sound of her voice, Bette had never known this before and frankly it scared her.

Tina knew, as though instinctively, exactly the kind of attention and comfort Bette needed. She could feel Bette’s pain when she looked at her; her beautiful eyes were overflowing with a raw ache and sadness. She allowed Bette to open the car door for her, she watched the brunette as she fumbled her way around the front of the luxurious car. Tina buckled her seatbelt as she did the night they got coffee, waiting for Bette to do the same before saying anything.

“Bette..I”, but she was a loss for words, she found that every sentiment in head had disappeared. Tina couldn’t just produce a sort of fake sentiment, one that mourners give to a family or friends that they are only minutely acquainted. No this meant more, it was more, how much more she wasn’t totally willing to examine quite yet. Tina overcame her sudden loss of words with her hand firmly set atop of Bette’s and she plunged into gear.
