    Part One of Two

    Tina woke that morning with a greater sense of emptiness than she had felt at any time during the last four months. 

     

    Lying in bed, she looked at the clock and saw that it was only 6:15am.  Turning towards the window, she saw that there was a chance that the sun could shine, but honestly, could care less whether it rained, hailed, poured or simply stayed dark.

     

    June 16th she whispered to the empty room.  Tomorrows Bettes birthday.

     

    Rolling onto her side, she pulled her knees up to her chest in order to wrap her arms around them as a way of protection.

     

    Bettes birthday was the first real occasion or event that they would spend separately since their break up.  They had separated four months ago, well after the Holidays and before Tinas own birthday.

     

    For whatever reason, not spending Bettes birthday with her seemed to bring home the fact that they really were separated, they really had broken up.

     

    Birthdays had always been a big deal in the Kennard household growing up and Tina had brought that tradition into her relationship with Bette, always making sure that she felt more special than usual on the day of her birth.

     

    She would never forget the first birthday of Bettes that they had spent together.  Tina had started the day out by bringing her breakfast in bed, followed by fabulous lovemaking.  She had continued to pamper Bette throughout the rest of the day, wanting her to know that she found as much joy in her birthday as she hoped Bette did.

     

    But in the beginning, Bette had said that she didnt think that it was a big deal at all.  Growing up, she said that Melvin had always marked the day with only a kiss on the cheek and a check folded into the inside of a Hallmark card, simply signed Love- Daddy.

     

    And thats all? Tina remembered asking incredulously.

     

    Yeah Bette softly said, thats all.

     

    Well, no more Bette Porter she said as she scooped Bette into her arms.  Im the new sheriff in town and things are gonna change round here.  Youll see giggled Tina. 

     

    And they had.  Every year, it had been Tinas mission to make Bettes birthday more special than the one just a year before.
