    Big surprises – Chapter 2

Angelica always enjoyed when Bette gave her lifts to school. It gave her time to talk to her mom or listen to her most recent CD. Bette, unlike Tina, was open minded to Angelica’s music taste. Tina always said that Angelica’s music was depressing or tuneless noise, which Angelica always argued against. However, this meant that Angelica could never listen to music when in the car with Tina.

Angelica opened her CD wallet, packed to bursting with all her favourite bands. She inserted her chosen disc into the CD player, pressed play and sat back in her seat gazing out at the passing scenery.

Unconciously, Angelica was tapping her foot along to the drumbeat and mouthing the words to the song. Bette noticed this and smiled. She loved how her daughter got so into the music.

    “Who’s this Angie?”

“Death Cab for Cutie” Angelica replied not taking her gaze away from the window. “It’s their new album”.

    “Huh!”

This exclamation got Angelica’s attention and she turned to face her mom with arched eyebrows.

“Do you not like them?” Angelica asked with a serious tone.

Bette knew she had to tread carefully and think about how she would reply before saying anything. She knew how annoyed Angelica got when Tina criticised her music and didn’t want to argue with her daughter on her birthday.

“Well?” Angelica asked urging her mom to reply.

Bette took a deep breath before speaking.
“Ye-ah” Bette said slowly. “They just sound a bit…whiney” Bette said the last word cautiously and looked towards her daughter as she slowed the car for a red light.

“Hmm…well, I guess that’s just your opinion. I think they’re amazing. In fact, for my 21st birthday, they’re going to play at the huge party I’m going to have at the Hard Rock.” Angelica said returning her gaze out of the window.

“Already thinking about her 21st. She really is growing up fast” Bette thought.

“Wait, why didn’t you bite my head of like you do to your mother when she criticises your music?” Bette asked at her sudden realisation.

“Because she expects me to” Angelica replied with her cheeky smile.
