Astral Romance // Tibette Goes Moulin Rouge – Ch 3
There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend
There may come a time when a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you’re awful nice
But get that ice or else no dice!
Bette gets up to go over to Tina, but Alice stops her.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry,” she says. “I’ll sally forth and tee things up!”
As Alice stands up, her cane knocks over a tray of drinks, spilling them on Jodi.
The diamond dogs continue singing: He’s your guy when stocks are high
As Tina and Wischnia continue with their number, they carry on a quiet conversation.
“Is the Duchess here, Joyce?” Tina asks.
“Liebchen, would Mommy let you down?”
But beware when they start to descend.
Wischnia looks over to see Alice wiping Jodi’s dress with her handkerchief.
“I’m terribly sorry,” Alice apologizes.
Tina and Wischnia circle each other. “Where is she?” Tina asks.
“She’s the one Alice is shaking a hanky at,” Wischnia replies.
Alice reaches around the pillar to take Bette’s handkerchief just as Tina looks over to find the Duchess.
“Excuse me, Bette, may I borrow…?”
Tina turns back to Wischnia. “Are you sure?” she asks.
“Let me peek,” Wischnia answers.
Tina has her back to Bette and Jodi, Wischnia peers round her and sees Alice again waving her handkerchief at an angry Jodi.
“Let me finish,” Alice says. “I’m ever so sorry! It’s so embarrassing.”
Wischnia turns back to Tina. “That’s the one, chickpea. I hope that demonic little loon doesn’t frighten her off.
But Alice has had enough of the Duchess. “Clean yourself off, you bourgeois pig!”
Alice throws the handkerchief in the Duchess’s face. Amy, the Duchess’s servant, pulls aside her jacket to reveal a gun.
“Sorry, sorry!” Alice says.
Tina and Wischnia duck behind a circle of diamond dogs for a costume change.
“Will the Duchess invest?” Tina asks.
“Pigeon!” Wischnia cries out. “After spending the night with you, how could she refuse?”
“What type should I be? Wilting flower? Bright and bubbly? Or smouldering temptress?”
“I’d say smouldering temptress,” Wischnia replies. “We’re all relying on you, gosling. Remember, a real show, in a real theatre, with a real audience. And you’ll be…”
“A real actress…” Tina finishes the sentence in a dreamy voice. She leaps up to finish the song. Alice tries to get her attention, standing in the crowd.
Tina sings: “Cause that’s when those louses go back to their spouses…”
“Bejewelled vision! Amazonian goddess!” Alice shouts out.
Two clowns carry Tina on their shoulders towards the table where Bette is sitting.
“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend…” Tina arrives in front of Bette as she sings the last notes of the song. Bette looks up at her, dumbstruck.
“I believe you were expecting me?” Tina asks with a smile.
