Armed Hostility – Chapter 2
CHAPTER 2
Well, ladies and gentlemen, believe it or not, Carmen easily turned that infamous player, heartbreaker, Casanova, serial cheater – Shane, obviously, who else? – into something different.
Better, even.
Shane fell in love with Carmen, Carmen fell in love with Shane. That’s what happened.
After their first night together, they became unable to stay away from each other.
I suppose that’s what love does to people.
And Shane, who had never fallen in love before, was completely, totally subdued to her fiancée.
Yes, fiancée.
Because after less than a month they were already living together. Then three, maybe four months Shane bought a ring for Carmen.
A year later, they were happily married.
So, huh… yeah, my best friend Shane – the one who had fucked half Los Angeles, the one who didn’t remember the name of the girl she had slept with the night before, the one who used to say “I don’t do relationship” – was completely, truly, incredibly in love.
With Carmen.
And that isn’t surprising, after all.
Have you seen Carmen?
Have you seen her face, her eyes, her lips, and that smoking hot body?
I mean, anyone who has two eyes – or even just one – cannot deny that she’s stunning.
Impressive, really.
There is not an inch of her that is out of place.
And then… she is exotic, and hot-blooded, and temperamental, and passionate, and funny, and smart, and….
Fuck, she is incredibly sexy.
Okay, I have to admit it: I have a thing for Carmen.
Always did, since the first time Shane proudly introduced her to us – her, their friends.
But, obviously, I never did anything about it.
Because Shane is love with her, and Carmen is visibly in love with Shane.
Because Shane is my best friend and I am glad she’s happy.
And because even Carmen became a good friend of mine, after all.
So, let’s carry on with their story. Are you interested, aren’t you?
Well, I would be if I were you.
And you should listen carefully, because this is not a fairy tale.
This is a dark humor comedy, with a lot of twists, and an unpredictable ending.
So just open your ears, and listen.
And, be kind: don’t remind me about that last cigarette under the glass.
Flashback – Shane
Carmen enters the room holding several colored ribbons in her hands.
I am standing straight on the ladder, doing my best to make this poor second-hand Christmas tree look decent.
My old friend Alice – well, my best friend Alice – is looking at me, nose up, with a huge box of silver and golden balls in her hands.
It’s the first Christmas with me and Carmen together as a married couple and I want everything to be as perfect as possible.
I mean, we aren’t rich at all and our little apartment really sucks, but, after all, this is what we can afford.
My job as a photographer isn’t exactly getting off the ground, yet, so I do what I have to do to give my family the best I can.
Which means that I cut hair at John’s saloon.
John isn’t a saint, in fact he is a pain in the ass, and the salary is shit, but it’s better than nothing.
Carmen does her gymnast thing at the best of her capabilities – especially in bed, with me – but being a professional athlete is not so convenient, unless you’re an Olympic champion.
So, she does her DJ thing, at night and whenever she can, and the truth is that she’s very good at it.
We try to spend all the time left together, because we are madly in love.
To be honest, I can’t even think about the old me… The one who was sleeping around and waking up alone all the fucking mornings.
My life wouldn’t be the same without Carmen.
And I know, because she says it to me every day, that her life wouldn’t be the same without me.
So, well, yeah… I am happy.
And I have changed a lot.
God bless that statuette, that is the only “precious” thing in our little house and that looks impressive on our old, crumbling fireplace.
“Merry Christmas, babe…”, Carmen says, flashing me her most beautiful smile.
I turn my head a little, trying not to look down because I am afraid of heights.
Yes, even the small ones.
“Merry Christmas, my love…”, I answer, smiling a little.
Carmen blows me a kiss and Alice rolls her eyes.
“You guys are disgusting…”, she murmurs, shaking her head.
“Come on, Al, give me those balls”, I interrupt her.
She looks up at me, raising her eyebrows and grinning.
“Say please”.
I sigh.
That’s Al.
“Please…”, I say, annoyed.
“No”.
Yeah, that’s Al.
“Nice try”, I smirk, “Now gimme those fucking balls”.
She chuckles, handing me the box.
“Thanks”, I say.
The doorbell ring.
“Carm…”, I call out.
I can hear her steps running across the living room.
“Don’t worry babe, I’ll get it”, she says, heading towards the entrance.
The door opens and I hear Dana’s voice.
Dana is Alice’s long time girlfriend.
Squeaks of joy from Carmen’s part. She adores Dane. And so do I.
What I love less, is seeing by best friend staring transfixed at my wife’s ass.
So I bend down towards Alice.
“Hey you… Stop staring at Carmen’s ass, okay? I don’t like that”.
She doesn’t go to the trouble of looking away.
“You don’t? Well, I do. She has the most perfect ass I’ve –“.
“Just stop it!”, I growl silently, “Or I’ll tell Dana”.
She waves my words away.
“Tell her… She won’t be surprised. Just a blind wouldn’t look at that –“.
I roll my eyes in annoyance.
“Jesus Christ, Alice! Are your clients aware that their lawyer is a total dork? Because I am!”, I reply, trying to fix a ball on a branch.
Carefully, I start going down the ladder with my legs shaking.
As soon as my feet finally touch the ground, Carmen’s lips are on the nape of my neck.
“Hi, honey. I am glad you made it”, she teases me.
I turn around and take her in my arms, starting to tickle her.
“Aaw stop that, stop!” she yells delighted, trying to slap my hands away.
I tighten my grip on her waist and kiss her lips.
“You weren’t saying that last night, were you?”.
She moans in my mouth, slightly licking my bottom lip.
“Hey Shane, aren’t you greeting me properly?”, Dana asks, putting her hands on her hips.
I chuckle, letting go of Carmen.
“Sorry Dane, I was a bit…”.
“Distracted, yeah… As usual”.
I hug her tightly.
“Merry Christmas”.
She gently pats my back.
“Aaw… Merry Christmas, Shane. Sorry for being late”.
“It’s okay, don’t worry”.
And then, we all sit down on the couch.
There aren’t many gift-wrapped packages at our feet, but the whole atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
Carmen grabs a soft bundle and hands it to Alice.
“Here, Al. This is for you”.
Alice’s blue eyes widen.
“Is that for me?”, she exclaims delighted, pressing her hand against her chest.
Carmen chuckles.
“Yeah… Come on, open it…”.
Alice unwraps her present rapidly and her smile widens.
“Oh my God Carmen! You made this sweater by yourself?”.
Carmen smiles.
“Yeah…”, she sighs, handing another bundle to Dana.
“I got one for you, too, Dane…”, she says, shyly.
The girls squirm, excited, clapping their hands, and I feel touched.
I know that Carmen wanted to buy something much more expensive for our best friends, but the truth is that we are saving every single cent.
And as a result, she had spent whole nights awake making those two sweaters.
And they are frankly wonderful.
“Do you really like them?”, Carmen asks, blushing a little.
I take her hand, kissing the back of it.
“Of course they do”, I whisper softly into her ear.
“Of course we do!”, Dana screams.
“See?”, I whisper, chuckling.
It doesn’t matter that she hasn’t a gift for me.
And it doesn’t matter that I haven’t a gift for her.
We have each other, and that’s fair enough.
Actually, having Carmen is more than I had been expecting from life.
So life is good, after all.
We spend the whole night with the girls. Red wine, small talking and laughing a lot.
It’s nice.
I feel at home.
From time to time, Carmen looks at me with so much love in her eyes that I feel overwhelmed.
And this is the most beautiful Christmas of my entire life.
