    Amicus Curiae

"Counsellors!" the judge shouted to gain the attention of the two adversaries. "Please approach the bench!"
The attorneys approached, contrite at the scolding they both anticipated from one of the most respected jurists in Los Angeles County.
"Ms. Kennard, you may not, in this or any courtroom, embark on a diatribe about ethical shortcomings, real or imagined, of your opposing counsel," Judge Robinson began.
    "Bitch," Bette hissed.
"Enough!" the judge continued. "Ms. Porter, your proclivity for swearing does not hold you in good stead with this court. If you two can’t keep your considerable emotions under control, I’ll let you cool your heels in a cell overnight because you’ll be found in contempt!"
"Up for a little jailhouse rock?" Tina glanced at Bette up and down with the most lascivious look she could muster.
"Judge," Bette was stunned at Tina’s audacity. "Sexual harassment!"
"Back away from the bench unless you want to spend the night courtesy of the county," the judge said quietly.
"Yes ma’am," Bette went back to the table where her co-counsel sat with the accused.
Tina silently returned to the prosecutor’s side, heart racing, and reached for a glass of water that she downed in repeated swallows.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Judge Sarah Robinson announced. "We are not going to be continuing with further arguments this afternoon. We will reconvene at 9 a.m., and hopefully cooler heads will prevail."
She stood after striking the gavel and made her way out the door to her chambers.
Tina stuffed some papers into her briefcase and conferred with her colleague out of the earshot of anyone around them. He nodded over her shoulder to indicate they had company.
She turned and found herself face to face with Bette Porter.
"I will report you to the law society if you offer one more comment like you made in front of the judge just now," Bette said.
"What are you going to say? That I made vague reference to an Elvis song? Good fucking luck."
"You must think your case is weak, so you’re trying to get me riled," Bette charged.
"The D.A.’s office decides what to prosecute and I do my best to make the case with the evidence that’s been gathered," Tina replied, rolling her eyes. "Who I come up against is immaterial to me."

    1. Fantastic!!! Just write to your hearts’ content and then more. Loved this version as well and who knows what will happen. Will this end up being published, sure hope so. Just keep writing dear, we’ll read.

    2. Wow, I didn’t know this was your story. I loved the last one. This one looks like it’s going to be great too. Tina seems a lot more self assured and appears to be hard to impress. Bette has her work cut out for her.

    3. I loved the original and im loving this version, as well. I must admit i didnt know it was you. Although, i was curious by the cryptic authors note. However, i decided there was some reasoning on your part to remain anonymous. It definitely added to the mystique. Thanks and im looking forward to seeing where you take this.

    4. I thought that might have been you! Does that sound creepy, I don’t even know you? Lol. It is not meant to be, more a testament to your unique, impressionable, and powerful writer voice. Will always read anything you write. Looking forward to more.

    5. You wrote “Held in Contempt?” WOW. You’re such a good and prolific storyteller. I wonder what’s the incentive for using an alias? Well, this version looks promising and I like the new twists. I trust that you’ll keep us interested and entertained. =) And though I may not have the chance to visit the site, read your posts and other unique stories and comment as often as I want to, please remember that I heart your body of work and your generous spirit. May your Muse never cease to inspire you! Many thanks for another gem of a story, jks. Cheers! =)
