The puddles of melted snow around her house broke in spectacular fashion underneath Bette’s boots as she hurried through the now heavy sleet and towards her car.
The temperature seemed to have finally risen a little, turning the driven white snow into grey slush all over the city but right now the semi frozen water which fell from the sky felt more like shards of ice against her face and the hand she was using to shelter herself from the onslaught.
She was going back to the hospital. All she had managed to do, from the moment she had put the phone back down, was shower and change, favouring a pair of worn jeans and a heavy knitted wool jumper over the strict professional suits she travelled to work in every day. She had lost track of how many hours she had been awake now, just knowing that her tiredness was only surpassed by the worry and the questions which kept on spinning around in her head.
Even more so now since that brief telephone call.
Jumping in the car, Bette quickly fired up the heater and rubbed her hands vigorously in front of the central vents as she gazed at the clock on the dash. 4:45pm.
Putting the car into drive, she pressed on the gas pedal with a little bit more force than she had really meant to. The tires began slipping on the still compacted snow, causing the back end of the car to shift sideways then catching again to the road making her surge faster than needed.
She hit the brakes, halting the car.
Hitting the wheel with her fist, she cursed then took a deep breath.
"You need to calm down!" she ordered herself.
Now was certainly not the time for heroics as she would be no use to anyone, no use to Tina if she turned herself into another casualty of the dreadful weather the city was experiencing.
She looked around before setting off once again, at a slower more controlled pace this time. There was a deep layer of snow still carpeting the ground, six glorious inches to be exact, the stuff of legend if you were a school kid because it meant the arrival of the most hoped for, Snow Day.

Thanks for thinking of K. Tina seemed very cold in this flashback. I don’t know how Bette could harbor love for someone who treated her so cruelly. However, that may also be another part of the story. Thank you K 😘

OMG…I’m on the edge once again with one of your stories…don’t get me wrong though. I love your stories, but now I’m totally stumped as to what and why Tina would leave Bette so suddenly without any warning. Please hurry back with another chapter!!! :)
OK, Tina is starting to tick me off. I hope we’ll get to see her patch up Bette when all is said and done. (I’d better go back to the tea-sipping: perhaps something with chamomile and lemon balm.)
WTH? Why so suddenly? Is Tina afraid of commitment? Nothing makes sense right now but I am sure you’ll fill in the spaces. Your writing is extraordinary. :-)

Very interesting update. Alright, this has me completely stumped. Why would Tina do this to Bette and herself because it seemed as though she didn’t want to hurt Bette in this way but she acted so hard toward Bette to make Bette dislike her for what she was doing. Who has threatened Tina or Bette’s life if she did not leave? What the hell had Tina done that she had to be so stiff and hateful toward Bette and walk away from her life? Was her sister involved and is that why she would not tell Bette anything about Tina and where she was? Did Tina marry a man and then run away from him after all these years? Does she have a child and couldn’t take it with her? Was Tina still in town just practicing somewhere in another part of town or the suburbs that Bette would never think to look for her. I feel like she was still in the area and watching Bette from afar. What the hell happened? Hope you will come back quickly with another chapter. I can’t believe this. Why is Tina’s sister now coming to talk with Bette? What does she know about Tina’s disappearance? Did she plan this because she was jealous to have Tina with Bette and no one for herelf. Please put me out of my misery. Thanks.

Oh my dearest friend, seems I have been missing this sordid tale. And not only that your message. I am trying to have an open mind as why Tina felt the need to leave so abruptly, but I am having no such luck. I feel Bette deserved more than a quick I have made a decision deal with it type of facade. Bette broken hearted is unfair and hard to ascertain but I could see how the departure of the love of her life could present such emotions and revelations. Please ensure my Bette gets a fair treatment when Tina comes around. I won’t tolerate her heart being broken once more. No pressure there then I might add C x
Wow, I hope Tina had a really good reason to walk away. If not, I don’t see why Bette would want anything to do with her.

Oh dear!! :-( this morning when I saw your posting, I was so happy and eager to read!! but due to persistent headache and some demanding things to be done, I just got the chance to read it now. And… I think it’s not so wise to read this as now my head is aching more due to this unexplainable cliffy and cold T!! :-/ why oh why Kins?! Looks like more chapter you post, more mistery coming.. I hope we will get more chapter though as I do curious where are you going to take us from here :-) PPVS! Thanks Kins!
