After the Mirror Shatters Ch. 6: Other People’s Mothers
Chapter 6
Shane took the steps up to her apartment two at a time. She knew that Eve would be waiting for her, so Shane was trying to move as fast as she could. When she got to the end of her hall, Shane saw the lean girl sitting next to her door. Eve was tapping her hands on the top of her knees as she was waiting, nodding her head to the music that was playing in her earphones from the disc man sitting next to her. Shane watched her for a minute, trying to read the younger girls body language. The black silk camisole Eve wore had spaghetti straps; one of them fell over one of her tanned shoulders. She leaned her head back against the wall and she finally looked in the direction of Shane. Eve smiled politely, taking the earphones off and stood up.
“Sorry I’m late Eve.” Shane said and pulled out her keys from her gray jacket.
“Hey, it’s no problem. I haven’t been here too long.” Eve dusted her hands off on her burgundy corduroys.
Shane looked around Eve and saw five suitcases, bags and boxes and a few paintings. “Wow, you weren’t kidding about not having much stuff.”
Eve looked at her things and nodded. “I move around a lot or at least I used to.”
“Cool, well, let’s get this stuff inside.” Shane smiled and unlocked her door. She turned back around and grabbed a few of the bags. Eve followed her into the apartment and began to look around. Black leather couches; glass coffee and end tables, steel lamps and pictures of women kissing or posing nude were everywhere. Shane tried to keep her own face from looking so surprised at the clean apartment, thanking Carmen in her head over and over for saving her. Eve’s mouth dropped open at the art. She was so preoccupied with gawking that Eve ran into the leather chair, flipping over and then falling to the floor.
“I suppose, I should have warned you about the way things were set up here.” Shane held back a laugh.
Eve hopped up like nothing happened. “No, no! It’s cool, it’s cool!”
“Follow me and I’ll show you your room.” Shane grinned and moved to a closed door. Eve walked to her and smoothed her hair. Shane opened the door to a white room with a bed that had no sheets. The walls were bare and the floor wooden. Eve looked over to a window that was huge and had two French doors, she smiled excitedly and opened the doors to a balcony and she looked over at a park. “You can start from scratch in here. If you ask me you got the best view.” Eve twisted around to look into Shane’s green eyes. “There are no house rules about people staying over. We just each do our own thing. Ok?”
