A Life I Never Meant Chapter Seven

As I lie in my hospital bed I try to ignore the dull ache from my broken wrist and wonder how long it is until my next shot of morphine. Prescription narcotics are my new best friend, well, apart from the woman is currently sat by my bedside. I look over at Bette, she looks shattered. I know that she has been up all night, first of all outside the operating room and then here, in the intensive care unit. I smile at her as I come round from my last bout of drug induced sleep.

Her eyes brighten as she can see me trying to make myself comfortable, which is hard as I’ve lost count how many tubes and wires are currently attached to me. I reach out my good hand and hold onto hers, this simple touch providing us both with the comfort that we need. Bette starts to say something, and then stops. She thinks for a few more seconds and then starts again.

“I know that this is a stupid question, but, how are you feeling?”

“It’s hard to say. My wrist hurts and I can feel where they sewn me back up after the surgery, but none of it seems real. It’s like it happened to someone else. I can remember a car coming towards me and the next thing that I know I’m in an ambulance on my way to hospital with the sirens wailing.”

“Do you want to know what happened?”

I think about this for a few seconds. It’s so strange to have a period of your life, no matter how brief, go missing. I want to know, just to fill in the blanks, but at the same time do I really need to hear how this much damage was inflicted on me.

“OK, but only the edited highlights.” I say, trying to laugh, through the pain.

“You were crossing the street when you were talking to me. The driver couldn’t have seen you until the last minute because he tried to swerve to avoid you but couldn’t react in time. The doctors say it could have been a lot worse if he had hit you straight on. Anyway, after he hit you thrown to the ground. You must have tried to stop yourself, somehow, which is why you have a broken wrist but the force that you hit the kerb caused the damage internally.”

    1. “Tina and Alice together, in LA, for the first time in five years. I want to believe that this will be the making of Bette, a return to the woman that I first knew, when she was happy.” Oh, please! It sounds like these two have done more damage to her than good in this story. And for god’s sake, why is Bette still having a hard time getting over Tina? It’s fucking Tina for christ’s sake…the one who pulled all that crap in S3; the one who totally humiliated and debased an erstwhile strong self-assured Bette. Man, you’re making it easy for me to not like this wuss you’ve depicted. If your Bette is still harboring issues over these two thus preventing her from findig her own happiness in life, then she deserves the crap she subjecting herself to. Please don’t make me become disgusted by this Bette because on the show, she’s my favorite character.Well, you clearly have my rapt attention. I should just quit reading altogether, but like carnage from a massive wreck, I simply cannot peel my eyes away. Hmph, oh the torture (all good, by the way).

    2. Alice and Tina in LA for the first time in 5 years after what sounds like shitloads of issues with those who stayed behind? I can smell the acrimony already.

    3. Great story. Love Shane still the wise one. Bette is not in love with Tina anymore but loves her still Alice in LA after 5 years. she will tear up WeHo. Forgot that Tina girlfriend is coming to town for Tinas birthday. write soon thanks

    4. I can’t wait for Tina and Bette to come face to face. Shane seems to be worried about Bette and Alice but I think deep down she know Bette is still very much in love with Tina reguardless of what she says. I hope that Carmen does find out and does come to visit Shane. It would be nice to see all the gang back and the 2 couples to start over again.

    5. Really great chapter – but if Bette is over Tina I’ll eat my keyboard. thanks for such an interesting span of time to see if these two can come back after 5 years apart.

    6. This chapter was great and I can hardly wait until everyone is face to face. And Yes, Tina, Bette still has that hold on you just as you have a hold on her heart. When they see each other it will be hard to resist embracing each other. It will be almost like old times in that they will feel that comfort and ease being held by the other person whether they want to admit it or not.

    7. I don´t have any nails to bite…This is going to be good….I can feel it, and as a Tibetter, Betta and Tina are going to realize that they belong together, please don´t put an “IC” on us, we love drama, but not too much drama. Thank you, this is a wonderfull history.

    8. CityGirl, another stupendous addition to your new story. You brilliantly created a scenario where Shane, even in her hospital bed, provided the clear head and insightful thoughts and rationale. Getting Bette and TIna in the same city, at the same time is a massive step forwards and I hope that their relationship can be re-kindled as the embers still glow with love and warmth for each other. Shane may be sure to enlist Alice in her plan to re-unite these soul mates even if Ally is the collateral damage. Please continue soon as this is a fabulous fan fiction. Thank you, Your Loyal Fan.
