A Deeper Song, post 5
A schedule was worked out. For the first few days they all stayed with Bette. Tina and Kit went with her to her ob appointment with Dr. Meadows that Monday. Bette would have liked to exclude them from her post exam findings but knew that she couldn’t.
Dr. Meadows did not hold back in her scolding of Bette.
“You are indeed pregnant.” Dr. Meadows confirmed, “You are about seven weeks. The first trimester is critical for fetal development. You are anemic and grossly underweight for your height and critically underweight for a pregnant woman. The labs look good except for the anemia and if you start to gain weight there is no danger to the baby. I will prescribe prenatal vitamins, which should correct the anemia provided you eat often. Vitamins cannot replace the food that you need.
I know that you have suffered a devastating loss recently, Bette.” Dr. Meadow’s voice took on a softer tone. “Pregnancy is difficult under the best of circumstances. I hope that you have the support that you need to deliver a healthy baby.” She glanced at Tina and Kit.
“She does.” They answered in unison, causing Bette to roll her eyes.
“Good, I need to see you every two weeks until the anemia is cleared and you have put on enough weight.”
They rose and thanked the doctor.
“Congratulations on your pregnancy, Bette, I’m sorry it is not as joyful an event as you and Rosanna had planned.”
Bette nodded and they left.
Later that evening after dinner, Bette grumbled loudly that the soup Nazi was more lenient than her current jailers. Finding a host of unsympathetic faces she crossed her arms and closed her eyes. She fell asleep almost instantly. Alice and Shane cleared the table and cleaned the kitchen while Kit, Tina and Angelica just watched Bette sleep.
“She seems to be sleeping more easily these days” Tina noted, her eyes remained fixed on Bette.
“Yeah, I’ll feel better when she gains a few pounds. I can’t believe how much weight she has lost.” Kit shook her head.
Tina looked at Angelica who was a silent witness to this conversation and Tina did not want Angelica any more upset than she already was. Since the crew had moved in Angelica was almost back to her old self. She still checked on Bette frequently but went out or had her friends over with her old regularity.

Tender and beautiful. Healing will be gradual. PPS.
Hey there, they’ve seen a lot of deaths in their lives: their relationship was the biggest imo; at least when someone dies u get to say goodbye but when a relationship dies it’s like a weeping wound BUT on the other hand if u make it to the friendship stage u still have something. I’m sure if being there at the moment of death makes it any easier, I was and I got to say farewell until we meet again but neither Alice nor Bette had that opportunity so I guess it hurts more pointedly…love Angie’s staunch stand for her mama, great kid!!!! I think they will all be good for Bette BUT somehow especially Tina becuz of the depth of intimacy/the knowing at another level which they share which most times doesn’t even need words; I was threatening all: u, Tina, Shane, Alice, Kit NOT Angie tho. Glad to see that maybe I’m more with u on this one. Such poignancy, beautifully written and at your speed, I love it.
I meant to say: I’m NOT SURE if being there at the moment of death….duh! but I think it depends on your character and your relationship with the person…some people I loved so much I couldn’t be around them in their last days like my grandmom….u evoke really deep feelings in me & memories…that’s ok becuz I learnt that each time I allow the memories back I heal a little more & get a bit stronger…
Love Alice and Bette supporting one another. Glad to see Bette getting better. Angie is too sweet with her determination to make sure her mom is fine. Great job K.
Beautifully written… love the scene with Alice and Bette on the swing.
I just caught up to this…I can’t believe I missed a story from one of my favorite writers. I am glad everyone is there for Bette…you are writing this so well…I want more please.
Loving the story……a little puzzled about the timeline – in post 3 you said it was 6 months after Rosanna’s death – and here Bette is 7 weeks pregnant? Probably my mistake…..
Your doing such a great job with this. Its so nice to see the gang gathering together to take care of Bette. Angie has grown to be a shining example of her parents. As sad as this is, the tibetter in me is hoping they will come together, for each other as well as Angelica, and the child that will be her sister who is on the way.
Things are getting better a bit at a time. Lovely, kelika. Thanks for the post
Love the story and your writing. It is difficult to imagine that Bette, even in her grief, just sits and mopes. Has she given up on her job?
You keep breaking my heart. With every step of this story :( Mark of a good writer. AD x
Very touching. PPS!!
Alice can always be counted on to bring the funny, but it’s lovely to see her softer, compassionate side too. Bette’s recovery from the trauma of Ro’s sudden death won’t happen overnight, but she’s lucky the framily (instead of the soup Nazi!) is there to help the process along.
Very touching, nice to see Alice’s perception skills used for good! LOL
That was great and tuoching!
