A Day in the Life, Part 3 of 3*
Her glass was empty. She checked her watch again. It was eight, exactly. She ordered another drink and waited. What a crazy day this had been. The drinks were working to mellow her out.
She was randomly ticking through ideas for a new supporter for the gallery when she realized with a start that she was halfway through her second drink and fifteen more minutes had passed. She plucked her phone out of her bag. It was turned on. She checked her voicemail. Nothing new. Where was Tina?
She paid for her drinks and went to the entryway where the maître d’ was eying her with pity.
“Ma’am?”
“Um. I guess my friend isn’t coming.”
“I see.”
“Can I get a table for one?”
“I’ll have you shown to your table immediately. Enjoy your meal.”
Bette followed a waiter to a table with one place setting. She sat down dejectedly, not very hungry but unwilling to waste a reservation that she’d had to trade a favor to get.
“Are you ready to order or shall I give you a few minutes?”
“I’ll order now.” She skimmed the menu. She might as well order decadent comfort food. “I’ll have the fettuccine alfredo and the triple chocolate cake for desert.”
“Very good, madam. And to drink?”
“Just Pellegrino, thanks.” She figured she had better take it easy on the alcohol.
She tried not to feel conspicuous sitting there all alone. Screw this. She would call Alice to come and join her. Her endless chatter would be annoying, but comforting; eating alone was too humiliating. She guessed that Alice’s attempt to “scope out the hotties” at the club hadn’t gone according to plan anyway.
Bette was scrolling through her phone’s menu when she sensed someone behind her and looked up, expecting the waiter with her water.
It was Tina, looking out of breath and slightly red in the face. “Hey,” she puffed. “I’m so sorry. My last meeting ran late and traffic was a nightmare. May I?”
“Oh, sure. Sit down.” The relief Bette felt was simultaneously overwhelming and confusing.
Tina sat down across from her. “I tried to call. I couldn’t get a signal.” Tina bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I hope you didn’t think I was standing you up.”
