Your Winter – (Chapter: One: Into Dust)

"Ugh, you’re freaking me out Carlin. Stop admiring your own beauty and come on. We’re gonna be late," Madison’s voice chirped from the doorframe. Spencer’s smile fell, as she turned slightly, seeing the girl. She hadn’t even heard her come in the door, but she rarely did. Madison wasn’t one for knocking. She was the "I’m gonna barge in because I own the world and everything in it," type.

"Well good morning to you too," Spencer replied, rolling her eyes. Madison definitely wasn’t a morning person. But, after being with Ashley for so long, she’d been prepared for girls being cranky in the morning. Ashley… Spencer’s face fell at the thought of the girl, but quickly wiped it away. Buried her. She’d buried Ashley with herself. With Glen’s dead, blue eyes. "You’re just upset you weren’t here earlier to admire my beauty," she added, jokingly. This… had gotten easier. The worthless, witty banter. Conversations now easily flowed from Spencer, instead of stagnant silence. She had learned to wear her mask perfectly… smiling when she was supposed to, laughing, touching a girl, walking with a bounce. But, it was fake… just like the eyes she peered out of now. And she only managed to muster up the strength to wear her perfected mask when Madison was around. She didn’t want to hurt the other girl by letting her see the truth… the truth that she wasn’t okay… the truth that she never would be.

Madison gave the girl an annoyed look, but it took effort to keep it there. It was hard to let her ritualized morning grumpiness overtake her fully when Spencer was in the room. She wasn’t sure if it was because Spencer was just the type to soak up negative feelings, or because Madison knew how long, and how much, it had taken just to get the younger girl out of bed. Sometimes, she was afraid of losing her again to that darkness that seemed to hover over her after prom. Of course, she’d never say this. "Oh, you’ve got me all figured out. I‘m secretly pining for the skeleton girl!" she shot back dramatically with sarcasm dripping from her voice.

Spencer smirked, letting her fingers do the talking. She raised her middle finger as she stood, flipping the ex-cheerleader off. Madison had an amused look on her face, her eyes slightly narrowing as her gaze landed on the fuck you gesture.
