    SoN AU

    I turn and leave.

    I return that next Thursday. Her car is in the driveway. You can hear the music from the neighbors yard. I crouch in my spot and watch, dad doing the jitterbug, the woman following suit.

    I do not know this woman. Who is she? Where did they meet? How does she make him like this…so full of joy and life? His essence is fading, slipping away day by day. It just doesn’t seem fair. In fact, it isn’t fair. I am jealous of them, of her. Jealous that I cannot share this moment, that I am not the cause of it, the reason for it.

    I sneak around the back as she leaves, gets in her car, drives away. I could hear her humming the tune as she walked down the driveway.

    Inside, dad is smiling. Sitting and smiling.

    That night, I return home late. Mom is in her bedroom, the door closed. Dad sits in his lounger, his eyes glazed over, the excitement and laughter faded completely. He takes his pills, overcome by a coughing fit. He is so far away.

    I squat down beside him and open my bag. I place the record on his lap. His fingers caress the cover; his eyes catch the price tag I forgot to take off.

    His eyes glisten and he turns to look at me. I place my hand on top of his, his liver spots splattered onto wrinkled skin. He squeezes my hand and we stare forever. The baseball game lingers in the background, but it is just my dad and myself, just us.

    ‘And you could have it all
    my empire of dirt.’

    A creak from the hallway breaks the spell. I hide the record underneath his chair and head to my room. I sit on my bed and cry.

    That next day I head back to the house. But her car isn’t there. I creep to the window and I hear the music, the record I bought him, only quieter this time. My father sits in his chair by the window, his eyes closed, smiling, his head bobbing to the music. He opens his eyes and looks out. He knows I am here.

    That this moment is just for me; just for us.

Honestly, it reads like a novel, its absolutely amazing, and it is one of few things ive EVER read that makes me feel so many emotions, and im glad that you made it more than smut and “spaction.” It didnt have to have the perfect happy ending to be absolute perfection and i want to thank you for sharing this with me and everyone
