Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 37: Vignettes)

The words mean nothing to him, as though spoken thousands of years ago, when he had sat on the floor of Ashley’s room, flipping through the pages of her notebook. He had copied those words onto paper. Why he chose those specifically, he doesn’t know; all he knows is that they were meant for Spencer.

He tosses the paper over his shoulder, having no more use for them. It rolls towards the tree, resting amidst the rusty carburetors and cement blocks, only to be picked up by the wind and swept away.

    ‘You are someone else.

    I am still right here’

    ******

    "Paula"

She was standing on a chair, amidst the closet of some vacation home; balancing up above, her hands searching for something trivial, meaningless, and unworthy. An unseen box tumbled to the floor, narrowly missing her head, careening down haphazardly.

    It spilled open.

She stood there, on the chair, frozen in place.

The photos were scattered about below her, some facing her, others turned away, a few leaning up against the chair’s legs.

She dropped to the floor and squatted, her hands shuffling through the snapshots like playing cards, a gambler’s weapon and liar’s game. Spreading them about, the colors and sleek texture shone with brightness, as the collage of memories stared back at her, out of order, yet still definite within time.

    ‘That old familiar sting…

Try and kill it all away.’

Her blue eyes tried to look away, but the photos were everywhere, all over the closet floor, blocking any available exit.

    Then she saw it.

Her mother’s white night gown burned like fire from the corner of the room, encased in a 4 by 6 inch box.

Paula didn’t have to stare; she knew what it was, when it was taken, and why.

Her throat closed up in panic, as she dropped to the floor, falling back into the hanging wardrobe of expensive satin and gaudy floral prints. She grasped blindly with one hand to keep from falling, the sleek material of a costume, slipping through the cracks between her fingers.

She fell to her side, off balance, her hands bracing her fall, only to slide amongst the Polaroid’s, several pictures sticking to the bare soles of her feet and to her left cheek, now sheen with sweat. Her eyes darted about madly, as she glanced up, the undersides of her dresses and dinner jackets hovering menacingly above her, threatening to engulf her with their lies and pain.
