Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 27: Nope. She Doesn’t.)

One of the pill bottles he had inspected sat precariously at the edge of the glass shelf, Spencer’s name visible even at such a far distance. He willed for it to fall, smacking the floor, pills shooting out everywhere on the floor, he and Ashley grinding the powder into the tile, where it would disappear into nothing, unable to harm Spencer.

He had seen her lying on the bed when he entered, her arm hanging off the side, as she lay on her stomach, her head hidden underneath a pillow. She looked dead, his heart racing at the first sight of her, confused that he may have stumbled onto a murder scene. As if Spencer were Marilyn Monroe, resting naked in a disheveled heap, the bottle of half empty pills on her bedside, her thin pale leg dangling off the side of the bed, the intermittent flash of the photographer’s bulb reflecting off her white skin, emulsion hard at work, capturing her innocence and the public betrayal within its grasp, soon to be splattered on the front page of The LA Times.

He did not know Spencer well. They had only met a few times; despite the fact her cousin was Spencer’s best friend. His thoughts fell back to Smuckers, and the shame that bathed his body in a warm honey, having subjected an animal to a human invention that raced through his bloodstream, altering his miniscule brain, forcing him into submission. He hated the dog for biting him, but he hated himself more for revenge. The dog acted on instinct, Dodger acted on rage; there was an obvious distinction between the two motives, which Dodger could not overlook no matter how well he allowed his emotions to mask the truth.

Spencer had lost control of her emotions, thoughts, desires, and now someone had laced her food with chemicals, and she could no longer think or act on her own. Spencer was not an animal, she didn’t bite out of instinct for survival or fear of attack, but she was a victim, one who needed to be understood, not medicated, and now she lay there on the bed, beaten, bleeding, and dying, a long row of bottles facing her every morning, reminding her of her own insanity and that she could not escape its clutches without the aid of a white circular pill underneath a childproof cap. It was not fair to restrain someone, keep them from feeling. Dodger believed the box of razors that lay next to her toothbrush and plastic container of floss, was to counteract her numbness, the next step in her bedtime routine: Take pills, wash face, floss, brush teeth, cut self. Repeat nightly.
