Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 17: Illusions, Mirrors, and a Chevy Malibu)

Anyways, my dad has this old Chevy Malibu that he bought when he was my age. He fixed it up and used to drive it everywhere. After his accident years back, it was too hard for him to keep up with any maintenance on it, so it kind of rusted up a bit and the red vinyl seats are all cracked. But, it still runs and looks pretty cool. Ashley had written this story once about an old car that had possessed its owner and eventually the car took him over completely. Turns out some old guy who killed people was the original owner and his spirit possessed the car, causing the vehicle to start and drive on its own. I thought Ashley was crazy and told her that she just described a novel by Stephen King. She just laughed at me and said she wanted to make sure I was listening.

Ash digs old cars and stuff. She actually knows more than I do about engines and carburetors and all that stuff. So, I though it would be cool if she and I drove out to Crater Hill and hung out, maybe sip some of my dad’s whiskey or something and just talk.

She seemed…pensive lately. Like, she was waiting for something to happen, yah know? I can’t really explain it, she just seemed…sad. And I hate to see Ash sad. It seems shitty stuff is always happening to her and I can’t seem to keep it from happening. Besides, Spencer and Madison have been acting weird towards her. Like they aren’t including Ashley in their plans, and I’m not really sure why. I tried once, to ask Spence about it, but she ignored me and started staring off into space, so I dropped it.

Okay, so I picked Ash up in the Chevy and she was all excited, touching all the knobs and stuff on the dashboard. I told her all about how my dad bought it and how with the accident he can’t really do much physical stuff, but she already kind of knew that. Am I rambling? Cause sometimes I can’t just get to the point.”

No, you’re doing fine. Please continue.

“Okay…so…oh, yah, Ash was totally into the car. We stopped at this light before I had to turn down Crater Lane to get to the hill, and there were these guys in the car next to us. They kept staring at Ashley. I thought they were staring at the car at first, but their eyes seemed to be tracing something inside the car and I realized it was Ashley. At first I was mad, but then that passed and like this wave of warmth went through my body. I just smiled, feeling proud that Ashley was with me in my dad’s car and these lame guys were checking her out so intensely, but she didn’t even look at them. In fact, she put her hand on my thigh…near my knee, as if she knew those guys were there but she wanted me to know that she didn’t care; that I shouldn’t worry, because she was with me and that’s where she wanted to be.

    1. I really liked Aiden’s converstaion with himself the whole obsession to remember everything exactly and yet how he still is unable to leave the memory for what it was, he has to recast himself in his new body. I really, really loved that. Great job.

    2. Of course, I loved the writing in this chapter. I love all of your writing because it is beautiful. What I didn’t love about this chapter is what took place in it. It’s weird, but it’s almost like I felt jealous for Spencer or something. I think this is the first time I’ve ever felt jealous while reading a fanfic. This was an important chapter though, so it is much appreciated :)

    5. First time I leave you a comment, but I’d like tell you that I love your story. It’s very different from the others I’ve already read in this site and it fascinates me how you are making that each chapter contributes to a global view of the main characters’ lives. Keep writing and please, post as soon as you can!;P
