Why Can’t We Be Together – (Chapter: I Still Need You)

Everyday I go to work, I work as a teacher assistant, and hopefully in a couple weeks a job offering will open for me. I want to be an eighth grade math teacher. Well that’s the easy part of my life. My mom and dad divorced soon after we moved back to Ohio. Ben wasn’t the only thing that bugged my dad, but my mom had a whole different attitude about everything. She lives nearby and they’re still friends, it’s really awkward with her sometimes. Ben moved in with her. He comes over some times. I don’t think she knows how rude she is. Anyway Clay is going to Yale studying to be a doctor. Glen could never play basketball again after his accident so he became a basketball coach at a high school in Michigan. And then there’s her. Ashley. I hadn’t seen her in years, and I miss her everyday.

I miss how she smelled and how she would smile all the time. Everyday I regret not trying to be with her. I couldn’t help the fact that I was moving, but I didn’t try to be with her either. Things could have been different. Now she has became a pretty big star and her music career has sky rocketed. I am so proud of her.

I date here and there, but no one is her. No one has her laugh or her logic on things. No ones lips feel as perfect as hers do one mine. There is no one I would rather spend my life with. But I know it’s over. You can tell when she is singing, the songs she writes, we’re definitely over. And it crushes me to know that I can’t even get one more chance.

    2 months later

"Congratulations, Miss. Carlin. You finally have a job offer." My boss handed me the letter and I almost jumped in his arms I was so happy. I had told him I would move anywhere for this job. But I wasn’t expecting this.

"King?" I said aloud. He looked at me still with a grin on his face.

"Yeah, it used to be a high school until this year. They built another high, and turned King into a middle school. I’m telling you Spencer, it’s one of the best schools now. You should feel honored." He smiled and put his arm on my shoulder. "You still have a week to think about it though." With that he left me alone.
