    Spencer awoke again, sweaty, panting, barely stopping the scream that had brought her dad running into her room the last few nights. She kept reliving the day of the fight over and over again. Somehow in her dream, Ashley and her mom always fought and Ashley always lost. In the dream, Paula would hurt Ashley in horrible ways, kicking her, throwing her against the ground, bludgeoning her with stones. It seemed so real Spencer would wake up screaming, scaring her dad into her room. Every night she tried to read, watch a movie, or think about anything in an attempt to keep her dreams focused elsewhere, but each night when she closed her eyes, the nightmare returned.

    She looked at the clock it was almost 12:00 AM. She sighed and got up to fix her sheets. When she dreamed they always ended up on the floor. Spencer’s eyes burned, she was so sleepy, and yesterday in school she had fallen asleep twice. ‘If I fall asleep tomorrow, they’re gonna call dad and then he’ll know that I lied to him about the nightmare stopping’.  Spencer’s forehead throbbed as she thought about her dad having one more thing to worry about.  They had all been on hyper schedules, trying to go to school and visit her mom and Glen in the hospital. It was getting to be too much. ’ There’s only one way that I’m going to be able to sleep tonight’. Spencer picked up the phone and dialed Ashley’s number.

    Ashley finally moved away from the window in her bedroom. She had been standing there for what she thought was only a few minutes, remembering that day, ‘Spencer has her nightmares and I have my thoughts’. Her phone began to ring, “Spencer, what’s wrong?” Ashley glanced at her clock and her neck snapped in surprise as she did a double take, it was almost 12:00 AM, ‘Holy Shit, I’ve been up for over an hour!’ “Baby, I can’t sleep, I…keep having…wait, Ash were you up already?” Ashley sighed silently as she tried to sound happy for Spencer, “I just watched a movie and I couldn’t go to bed until it finished. You know I have no willpower. I can’t wait for anything, I have to know NOW!” Spencer laughed at Ashley’s quiet roar. Ashley blushed in pride at her ability to make Spencer laugh, no matter how dark her own thoughts got.
