We All Love To Score – (Chapter: 2: We All Have Secrets)
“Especially daddy.” She laughs and I get her, her ice-cream. We go back over to the car where James is sat.
“Finally.” He moans. “We need to go and get Kieran.”
“Ok.” I swear he loves that boy more than Sarah. He should treat them the same. They both deserve equal attention. He was worried about Kieran being left out when Sarah was born, which is understandable, but now he leaves Sarah out.
“Daddy, when we get Kieran can we go to the park please?”
“We will see what Kieran wants to do hunny.” See what I mean?
“I think the parks a great idea.” I saw James roll his eyes and Sarah smile happily with chocolate ice-cream all around her mouth.
We eventually got the school and Kieran came running out. “Dad, there is this soccer thing down at the park tonight; it’s free, can I go please?”
“Of course you can son.”
“What time?” I asked.
“It’s from 6-8 and it’s on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.”
“Hmmm I don’t know. You still haven’t done your room.” I played.
“Muuuuuum. Pease? I’ll keep my room tidy for a week.”
“3 weeks.”
“2.” He smiled.
“Deal. Get in the car.” He got in and started poking Sarah, who started poking him back with sticky fingers. They were cute together… most of the time.
“So mummy can we go to the park?” I looked in the back; Sarah had gotten ice-cream all over herself.
“Not tonight baby. How about tomorrow? It’s Saturday so we can spend the whole day there.”
“Yay.”
“Kieran are you coming with us?”
“Actually mum, can I stay over at Christian’s tonight? His dad is back in town and he’s brought Jamie these cool laser guns that I have got to try. So I will probably be gone most of the day tomorrow as well.” That boy is way too smart for his age, mid you, so is Sarah. Hard to believe she’s only 4.
“Ok. Is Christian’s mum going to pick you up from soccer then?”
“Yeah. Christian plays as well. It’s a 6-10 years club so he just got in.”
“Ok that’s fine.” We got home. 4 o’clock. Best put dinner on. I went into the kitchen; hear James talking on the phone. He comes into the kitchen and looks at the food being cooked.
“Actually babe, I’ve got to go into work for an hour. I’ll be back to take Kieran to soccer.”
“Ok. I’ll see you later.” Like he thinks I don’t know.
Sarah comes into the kitchen. “Mummy who was daddy on the phone to?”
“Just a friend sweetie. He has to go into work.”
“What did he mean when he said ‘We have to be quick’?” Please god let her be this innocent forever.
I shut my eyes and took in a deep breath, I couldn’t let Sarah see the almost tear that formed in my eye though. “He has to go into a meeting; it has to be quick because he has to take Kieran to soccer.”
“Oh ok. What are we having for dinner? It smells yummy.”
“Your favourite. Fish fingers, mash potato, peas and white sauce.”
“Mmm.” I smile at her and she takes a seat on the table, watching me cook.
“Want to help?”
“Really? Yeah.” She says that with such enthusiasm. It reminds me of when I use to cook with dad.
