Unfinished Sympathy – (Chapter: Unexpected Outbursts)
“Ok, how about that guy over there?” Spencer was desperately casting around the room hoping to find someone that it could be.
“No. Forget I said anything, I can’t tell you.” Ashley was suddenly a lot more sober than she had been about 3 minutes ago and had s very serious look on her face.
“Ash, come on, I want to know. If it’s not someone you like then what is it you’re trying to tell me?” Spencer, all her instincts screaming against her, continued to push to find out what it was Ashley was hiding. It went on in this vein for about 15 minutes, with Ashley refusing to speak and looking more and more shifty and Spencer not giving up on the asking. Both the girls at this point were grinning manically and pretending to be laughing but Spencer could feel that actually this wasn’t funny and what she was doing was in fact a very stupid idea.
“Ok, fine Spence, fine….I’ll tell you but-“ Ashley was cut off abruptly by the reappearance of Kyla. Setting down fresh drinks on the table Kyla brightly insisted that they “Continue the game? Come on guys, it’ll be fun.”
Under the table Spencer got out her phone and began to text Ashley even though the girl was right next to her.
Spencer: – Just tell me Ash.
Ashley: – come to the loo
Spencer sighed and got up. She was going to get an answer dammit.
“I’m just going to the loo guys.” She turned around but before she’d even made it a metre away from the table she heard from behind her
“Uh, yeah, me too.” Ashley got up, leaving their friend sitting alone at the table.
“I’ll only be a few minutes. Promise.”
Spencer walked into the loos and spun around on her heel.
“What is with this Ashley? Seriously, what the hell is going on?” There it was again, that sounding angry thing. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to shout. What’s up Ash?”
Ashley didn’t reply. Instead she scuffed her foot back and forth on the floor looking pointedly at the only occupied cubicle in the loos. Swaying a little she spat on the floor.
“Lovely.” Spencer had not come in to the toilets to watch Ashley spit on the floor. Finally, after a rather awkward silence, the occupied cubicle became free once more and the only other occupant of the toilets left.
“So, come on Ash. Is there something wrong?”
“The thing is Spence, it’s that…..I…..well….” and suddenly Ashley lunged at Spencer, grabbing her face between her hands she began to pull the blonde’s head towards her. Shocked, the only thought going through Spencer’s head was that Ashley was so drunk that she was trying to give her a hug or kiss her on the cheek and had missed so at the last moment Spencer turned her head to one side.
“See? See what I mean?” Ashley exploded. Not literally, but figuratively speaking, she went absolutely insane and yelled at Spencer. Backing off to the other side of the toilet she started to mumble to herself. Spencer, very worried at her friend’s behaviour, started to cross over. Ashley hauled herself up onto the sinks and Spencer stood in between her legs so she couldn’t escape.
“Ash, what’s going on?” Spencer was worried. She’s never seen her friend act like this before.
“I really want to kiss you.” Ashley did not waste time stuttering over this. She just said it. It was more like it spilled out really just another effect of the alcohol. Spencer took a deep breath and tried to get her thoughts in order.
