Turn of a century
Unlocked that it was. I pondered why she never seemed to lock it. How could she fall asleep at night without a worry in the world that anyone could easily break into her room? Well, your typical human burglar would have some trouble climbing up, (trouble that I didn’t have) but still.
Making my movements as gingerly as could be, I pushed down on the golden latch, creaking the door open. I froze just in the entrance, careful to catch any movement from the bed.
“Why am I in here?”
The thirst…it burned in my throat from the lack of familiarity that I hadn’t had for so long. Bella Swan’s floral freesia scent wafted towards me from the bed in which she lay.
That night Bella tossed and turned more frequently than on the last night I had come. Her thoughts were unsettled and yet I did not know what those thoughts were.
I knew that I shouldn’t-couldn’t be that close. And yet, I stayed just a few feet away from the bed and she survived.
At one point, her rose pink lips twitched. Her right hand gripped the pillow while her left was tucked underneath it.
“Edward…”
I held my breath. My first thought was that she’d somehow sensed my presence in the room. But when I leaned forward to examine her face, her eyes were sealed in sleep.
So…why?
“Edward…” Bella murmured again. Then she let out a soft sigh. “Don’t go. Please, don’t go.”
I still hadn’t breathed. I was suddenly as afraid as I had been the first day we’d met, to breathe. Afraid to feel her tempting scent waft around me and pounce on the sleeping girl. That sweet, compassionate girl who was obviously dreaming of me but not in a scary way. She actually wanted me to stay.
That was the most amazing part of that day.
I demanded internally. This was the last place that I should be.
Carlisle and Esme thought together. I pulled myself from off the couch and turned to encounter the expectant looks in their eyes.Carlisle insisted, leaning forward. I merely shook my head.Esme planted a kiss on my forehead. That was the same thing Carlisle had said. The guilt was beginning to make me feel nauseous. She hid her distressed face in my shoulder.Carlisle pressed, anxiously. Carlisle always bore an incredible composure but now he was really distressed.Carlisle’s eyebrows scrunched up together with more worry.
