The Assistant – (Chapter: 16)
“You didn’t tell me your sister was here,” he said, looking back Glen.
“I didn’t know she was going to be,” Glen said. “She came home early.”
“This works out even better. I have a new contract for you as you requested,” Matthew said, waving a thick manila envelope as he approached Spencer. “But there are more stipulations in it.”
It finally hit her. This was the guy from the parking lot. The journalist who’d offered her an obscene amount of money to leak information on Ashley. How did he even know where she lived? How did he know Glen?
“What’s going on?” Spencer said, turning to Glen. “You know him?”
“Well…” Glen mumbled, looking down at his hands.
Matthew said, “Don’t worry. My dealings with your brother will remain confidential as well. I understand why you would be hesitant about talking directly with me, but I assure you everything we discuss will be held in the strictest confidence.”
He handed her the envelope. Spencer stared at it completely baffled. She didn’t have any clue what this guy was talking about. She’d left him a voicemail weeks ago saying she had no intention of betraying Ashley. She knew this was Glen’s doing. She wanted to wring his neck right now.
“I’m doubling your offer,” Matthew said, tapping the envelope in her hand. “$120,000 for information on your boss. But for this amount you have to tell me everything. I want to know when she wakes up in the morning, how she takes her coffee, how many times she takes a piss in a day, no details spared.”
He smiled, waiting for an answer.
Spencer was trying to get her head around the figure he’d just told her. $120,000. She couldn’t imagine having her hands on that amount of money. Carmen had already paid Sammy’s medical bills so that wasn’t a problem. But she’d taken so many weeks off from work lately, she desperately needed the money for school. Even if she worked overtime until classes started, she still wouldn’t have enough to pay for tuition, books, gas and the heap of other bills she had piling up. Sure, her parents had offered to pay for school, but she had no plans to take them up on that offer. She was already practically living off of them by not paying any rent. If they paid for college as well, she’d probably be their biggest tax-deductible expense this year. $120,000 would more than help her pay for everything and have some left over. But, no, she couldn’t take it. She couldn’t even consider taking it. Betraying Ashley like that was unimaginable.
