    The Assistant – (Chapter: 12)

Ashley cleared her throat and took another, closer look at the resume.  “So what makes you think you’ll be a good fit here?”

Again, Marilyn only stared. Spencer shifted uncomfortably in her chair.  She couldn’t tell whether the girl was extremely nervous or just unstable.  She wished now more than ever that she had been the one to schedule the interviews.  Spencer was just about to ask Marilyn if she wanted a glass of water to calm her nerves, when she finally spoke.

    “I can’t believe I’m sitting here.”

    “What?” Ashley said.

    “You’re Ashley Davies.”

“Um, yeah.”  Ashley smiled, trying to hold back a laugh.  “That’s what they tell me.”

“I have every CD you’ve ever made.  Even the soundtracks.  I went to your concert at the Staples Center last year.  Third-row seats.  How rockin’ is that?  You were better in Vegas, but I decided to drive there last-minute so I had to get seats in the nose-bleed section.  I seriously have every poster you’ve ever been on.  You remember that song you did with the Foo Fighters? I even have the promo poster for that.”

By the time she finished, everyone in the room felt the need to take a long breath. Ashley spoke first, “You’ve spent so much money me, I feel like giving you a job would just be reimbursing you for expenses.”

“No one is going to believe that I actually met you.  Can I take a picture with you?”  Marilyn asked, pulling a camera out of purse.

“I’m sorry, we don’t have time,” Spencer said, standing up. “Our next interview is coming soon.”    She knew she needed to interfere before Ashley got upset.  Her boss hated it when fans came up to her at inappropriate times, like at restaurants or at the spa.  Spencer was pretty sure an interview would fall under that category.

“Wait, wait, wait,” Ashley said. “I’m sure we can spare a few seconds for Marilyn here to have a picture. Spencer, you take it.”

“Seriously?” Spencer looked at her boss.

“Come on, Marilyn,” Ashley motioned for the girl to stand beside her.  Marilyn shoved the camera into Spencer’s hands and rushed over to Ashley’s side.
