Surviving Desperations – (Chapter: Where?)
"Despiértese." The voice bought Nikki’s attention to the door where a young woman dressed as a nun was stood. Nikki shook her head. The woman walked over to her, and carefully held a glass of water which Nikki greedily gulped. The woman smiled before taking away the glass, saying. "Tenga cuidado. Usted estará enfermo" Nikki shook her head. The woman smiled and said softly. "Usted no habla español" Nikki shook her head again, and tried to speak for the first time, but her throat was too hoarse to try and her mouth was to dry to form words. The nun smiled. Nikki studied her carer’s face. Dark skin, dark eyes, wrinkled either from age or the events that shook the world. Nikki assumed she would be about 50 and one of the lucky ones. She struggled to keep her eyes open. Her carer smiled as she took away the water and adjusted her pillows. Nikki fell asleep instantly.
After a few days in a place unknown to her, Nikki began regain her health. Her carer whose name was Maria didn’t speak a word of English and she didn’t speak Spanish. They communicated very much through signing and drawing pictures. The pain in Nikki’s leg was getting worse, and Maria face was of concern when she changed the bandaging. She quickly covered it so not to alarm her patient. She smiled weakly before hurrying out of the room. Nikki found this curious and swung her legs over the side of the bed resulting in loud screams of agony. She crumbled to the floor and blacked out.
"Nikki! Run!" Nikki turned and stared at he person shouting at her. "I am not leaving you." Nikki fell to her knees and struggled to pull the rubble from the body of her friend. The buildings shaking and collapsing around her. A hand grabbed hers bringing it to a halt. "Stop! Nikki! Just go!" Nikki shook her head and tears welled in her eyes. "I can’t leave you!" Bricks fell from above her head, miraculously missing her as they fell to the ground. Nikki continued to kneel and cry, not caring about her own safety. "I am not leaving you! I am not leaving you!"
Nikki felt herself being shaken awake. She looked up and saw Maria’s concerned eyes looking into her own. "Nikki, Usted tuvo un mal sueño. El médico estaba aquí. Ella le dio alguna medicina. La pierna es buena ahora." Nikki just nodded not having a clue what the woman had just said. Her leg did feel better, and she felt she had slept for days rather than hours. She no longer knew what day of the week it was or where she was, but she didn’t care. These things no longer mattered in the world. Her nightmare soon became a distant memory as she tucked into the food laid before her.
