Secret Truth – (Chapter: Chapter 1)
Spencer went to grab her book bag and went to her room and locked the door, she ran her fingers through her hair as she contemplates at the mess her life had become. Growing up Spencer always thought she had the perfect family loving parents, loving siblings all that she ever could want. Her home was always filled with love and compassion, but through the years all the love that filled the house seemed to disappear. Spencer was always consider the out cast in her family, been the daughter of the Governor of California and the daughter of LA’s top doctor she was expected to live up to certain standers which unlike her brother’s she did not. She was not athletic like Glen who every girl wanted to date, every guy wanted to be and who every college wanted to play basket ball for them nor was she a brain like Clay who had scholarship lined up for him from every Ivy league school, but the icing on top of the cake, the one that made Spencer’s parents despise her more than anything was the fact that she was gay. Spencer remember the night that she came out to her parents it was the first time her father looked at her with disgust, her mother just shook her head and when into the kitchen and pour herself a drink, her brother Glen told her how disgusting she was and Clay told her to stay away from him. This was one of the lowest points in Spencer life; she thought that she would never get through if it wasn’t for Ashley. A smile crept on Spencer’s face as she remembered her girlfriend. Ashley was her everything, she was the only person Spencer really love and Spencer knew that Ashley loved her well she had too if she could put with Spencer and her problem. Ashley Knew everything that Spencer went through, she really hated it when Spencer would show up at school with bruises all over her body. Ashley had try numerous time to encourage Spencer to report what her parent were doing to her, but Spencer response was always “Do you really think that anyone would listen to me if I say that my parents are hitting me Ashley? Come on they are fucking Arthur and Paula Carlin for God sakes, the prefect couple, the prefect parents who would believe me Ash.” At this Ashley would just shake her head and response “Some one babe, someone who doesn’t have their head too far up their ass to see that even the “prefect people” do the shitty thing”. “I can’t baby, I just can’t” that would be Spencer’s response. This was the conversation they would always have until Ashley stopped pushing and came to the conclusion that when was ready she would tell someone.
Spencer’s thoughts were soon interrupted by a loud crash and a groan out side this cause Spencer to jump and knock over the cup which contained her school equipment on the floor. Spencer didn’t bother to go outside and see what it was her mother. As she fell to her knee to gather her things, there it was as if an angel sent to her from heaven; her compass. Spencer picked it up and as she did all the thought of the things that had happened came back to her mind. Night after night cleaning up after her drunken mother and even being hit by her; walking in on her father and Christine having sex in her parents’ room; trying to live up to her family’s expectation, and worst of all been ridicule for loving Ashley.
As she looked at the compass a little voice said, “Do it, do it, you’ll feel better”. She shook her head and gave in. The sharp point of the compass ripped through Spencer’s white flesh at first contact and the thick red blood flowed from her hand. Spencer gave a smile and a sigh of relief and made more marks on her hands and feet. Indeed, she felt better. Finally, she found something that was hers, something that no one could take away or manipulate. She found something to take away her emotional pain, something that would never let her down. She found something that would never break her family apart or her heart; something that would not tell her that she was stupid, good for nothing nor unaccepted. She found something that would be there for her through thick and thin. She found something that she could turn to and was not to be busy or drunk to listen. After Spencer made a few more cuts on her body, she put the compass down where she went to bed contented.
