Playing Doctor – (Chapter: chapter 1)

    What a smartass.

    “No he hasn’t”

“Mom why do you even have to be here I can answer her questions on my own”

“Clearly you cant Wilson because we both know you have not even attempted those exercises.”

“Okay, umm why don’t I talk to Wilson alone for a little bit and we will finish up the appointment. I promise I will fill you in on everything”

This was going to be a long day. Once I had Wilson to myself we made small talk and I tried to figure out why he was so resistant to his own recovery. Eventually he started to open up, after what seem like hours.

“I really did try those exercises.” I lifted an eyebrow at the boy in disbelief which got a small laugh out of him.

“Once, for like 5 minutes. But I did try, they are just so boring. And I’ll never be able to pitch a baseball again anyway so what the hell is the point really?” he avoided my eyes but I could tell this was the obstacle holding him back.

“How do you know that? Did you get a medical degree between now and the last checkup” I joked with him but I could tell this was really messing with his head.

“Look, I know squeezing a sponge for an hour every night is not exactly Super Nintendo. But if you don’t try to make a recovery we will never know how much progress you can really make. People beat the odds all the time, and maybe I can work on some new ways to approach it, but im only going to go in as far as you, I have your back but only if you swear to give me a 100%. And tickets to the World Series when you’re a star pitcher. Deal?”

“Okay deal. And Dr. Carlin, I think you should know something.”

    “What is it?”

    “Nobody plays super Nintendo anymore.”

I filled in his mother on our new and improved alternative approach decision. Although, I did not exactly have an approach in mind.

“Kyla what is a good way to exercise a hand that we haven’t already suggested?”
