Nothing But A Heartache – (Chapter: You Owe Me)

    Nothing But A Heartache

    Chapter Nine

    SPENCER’S POV:

I didn’t get much sleep last night. I wanted to make sure that if Ashley woke up in the middle of the night I’d be able to help her. She is still asleep and I am lying next to her in her bed.

Spencer is laying on her side watching Ashley sleep. Ashley begins to wake up and turns over onto her side facing Spencer. Her eyes open and she squints at the light.

Ashley: Jesus, who moved a spotlight into my room?

    Spencer quietly laughs.

Spencer: Ash it’s just the sunlight coming through your window.

Ashley hides her head under a pillow.

    Spencer: How are you feeling?

Ashley: Like crap. Could you shut the blinds?

Spencer gets out of bed and walks over to the window to shut the blinds. After she does Ashley gets up and sits on the edge of the bed. She had her head in her hands with her elbows resting on her knees. Spencer sits down next to her.

Spencer: So…do you remember what happened last night?

Ashley: No not really. I didn’t run down the street naked did I?

Spencer: No. Why, have you done that before?

Ashley: No. (pause) Just a neighbor’s yard once.

Spencer: Listen, about last night. I know you think you don’t deserve…(sighs) what I’m trying to say is, I want-

    Ashley: Oh…I’m gonna be sick.

Ashley quickly jumps off the bed and rushes to the bathroom. Spencer follows her in and Ashley is leaned over the toilet throwing up. Spencer kneels down and holds Ashley’s hair and rubs her back.

Well so much for my little talk with Ashley. She was in the bathroom for a good while getting everything out of her system, and I mean everything. I came pretty close to throwing up myself, but I held it together. Ashley also had a pretty big headache so I gave her some aspirin to take. After that she went back to bed and fell asleep.

    MEANWHILE…

Aiden is at the pier leaning on a rail looking at the ocean.

    AIDEN’S POV:

I don’t know what I’m doing here. I told myself when I got out of rehab I was going to stay away from these people. But here I am, waiting to meet my ex-drug dealer, Dante.

I’m becoming more uneasy by the second. I can’t do this.

Aiden turns around to leave when he almost runs into Dante.

Dante: What’s up Dennison? Long time no see.

    Aiden: Hey Dante.

Dante: It’s good to have you back in L.A. I need you to run a couple deals for me.

Aiden: I can’t do that Dante. I’ve been clean for 2 months, and I plan on staying that way.

Dante: Hey man, I’m not asking you to use any of the drugs, I just need you to make the sale. No big deal. Now, I need you to meet this guy down by-

Aiden: I said no Dante. I only agreed to meet you today to tell you that I’m done with this, all of it. This isn’t my life anymore.

Dante: Do you know how many times I’ve heard this story before? People always say they’ve given up drugs for a “better life”, but they always end up right back on the street. They’re hooked and they always will be. You’re no different Aiden.

Aiden: Yeah, I am. So do me a favor and stay away from me.

Aiden begins to leave when Dante stops him by grabbing his arm.

Dante is getting more angry with Aiden.

Dante: You do not walk away from me. Without me you would’ve died out there on those streets. You owe me Dennison.

Aiden: I don’t owe you anything.

Aiden shakes loose of Dante’s grip and starts walking away.

Dante: That’s where you’re wrong. Do you remember that time you got busted for trying to sell coke to an undercover cop, and I had to come bail your ass out of jail.

    Aiden turns around.

Dante: $2,000. That’s what you owe me.

Aiden: Dante I don’t have that kind of money.

Dante: Well you better find some way to get it, because I want that money in my hands by midnight tomorrow.

Aiden: How am I suppose to get $2,000 by tomorrow?

Dante: That’s for you to figure out.

    Dante starts to leave.

Dante: And Aiden, if I don’t have my money by tomorrow I’ll make your life a living hell.
