Mature For My Age – (Chapter: chapter 2: just my luck)
Chapter 2…
Spencer let the ocean breeze and salt sink into her skin. Wind flooding her senses, eyes shut, and all nerves calm.
“Why do you do that?” Glen turned to catch a glimpse of Spencer, before attaching his eyes to the road again.
“Do what?” Spencer replied still basking in all the sunlight.
“That. Close your eyes every time you’re in the car, then you glue your hands to any thing stationary.” Glen flipped his turn signal on and proceeded to the center turn lane. Spencer opened her eyes and sat up straight when she felt the car accelerate.
“Iono…it makes me feel better. I get anxious in cars.” Now the car had come to a complete stop after Glen pulled into, what seemed like, the only open parking space in all of Down Town Huntington Beach.
“Yeah I noticed…I just don’t get what exactly about a simple car ride freaks you out so much.” The two siblings made their way to the shore line. Glen lugging a long board while Spencer juggled a beach chair, her unsecured Ipod, and her towel, witch seemed to have come unraveled within the last few steps.
“You know why Glen…” she began walking faster” dad always scared me when he would just yank me away from the house and take me to where ever his fix was…I just can’t seem to get in a car and feel like I’ll be going back to a familiar place.”
Finally reaching a decent place for sunbathing/relaxing in the sand, Glen immediately took off with his board into the water. Spencer just sat and watched her brother sitting on his surf board, waiting for the waves to pick up.
I have no idea what I’d do with out that kid.
She smiled at her luck. Glen was her safety net, but Spencer never let a day go by with out making her self feel guilty. Aurther was her father. Not even a marriage tied Glen to him in any way. It was Paula that was the simple strand between him and Spencer. She felt guilty, not because it was her fault her parents fought, but because in her mind, if she wasn’t in the picture, Glen could have a much better life. Sure he still wouldn’t have a known father but he definitely wouldn’t have to answer to a drunken idiot like Aurther. Spencer had finally gotten used to the term “Half brother” after she was almost expelled from school for tackling a boy to the ground for bringing up the topic of her and Glen only being ‘Half’ blood.
Spencer let her body loosen up and she closed her eyes, drifting into the sleep she had lost the night before.
IT was about an hour later before Spencer was rudely awakened…no rudely would be an understatement; Spencer had been beaten awake, in some non-brutal way any ways.
“ow…shhhhhit!” She sat up holding her face.
“Oh my god, I am soooooo, so, so sorry” A panicked voice announced from Spencer’s right side, witch was the direction the ‘attack’ had come from. Spencer kept her right hand close to her face while she steadied her self in the chair with her left. She was dizzy, confused, and after a quick hand check, she realized she was bleeding.
“oh, shit…here, lemme help you get cleaned up.” A young, brown haired, girl was now at Spencer’s side, kneeling down to help Spencer to her feet. “My names Kyla, by the way…” She wrapped her arm around Spencer’s waist to keep her vertical, while taking Spencer’s around her neck. “uhh…for the record my spike isn’t usually so sloppy, or lethal for that matter.” Spencer let her self laugh at that remark. “sooo…does my victim have a name?”
“Spencer…Spencer Carlin.” Her voice was low and self conscious.
“Well Spencer, I seriously hope you have insurance,” A smirk spread across Kyla’s face “because I just might have to sue you for being so careless…I mean, who falls asleep at the beach?” They had finally made it through the public restrooms’ not-so-clean door, as Kyla led Spencer over to the sink, getting her to sit atop the counter.
“Yeah well, I was dreaming of a semi hitting me just be for I was smashed in the face by a volley ball.” They both laughed before the bathroom door swung open, making Spencer wince when Kyla was startled an accidentally hit Spencer’s nose again.
“Jesus Ashley, do you ever make a peaceful entrance?”
