Cat: [with a smirk] Playin’ hardball, huh… Okay, Annabelle, I guess you win.
Annabelle: I could care less about myself, but there’s a lot at stake for Miss Bradley. So you’d better make it good.
Mother Immaculata enters without knocking, and Miss Bradley follows.
Colins: Mother Immaculata! Miss Bradley…
M.I.: [smiles tightly] Good afternoon, girls. [turning to Annabelle] Annabelle, I’ve been informed that you were not in the room last night after the dance.
Annabelle shoots a scathing look at Cat.
Cat: Mother Immaculata, I made a terrible mistake. Annabelle was in our room last night. I must’ve really been out of it. I’m sorry for any misunderstanding.
Annabelle: Kristen and Colins and I came back from the dance together.
M.I.: [looks at Kristen and Colins, who is nodding earnestly. Mother Immaculata scrutinizes their faces for a crack in the facade, but finds none] Very well. [steels herself and turns toward Cat. Her voice is stern] Catherine what were you trying to accomplish with such a fabrication? This is a serious breach of the honor code. I’ll see you in my office immediately to discuss the consequences.
Cat: Son of a—
M.I.: Catherine! I advise you to keep a civil tongue!
Mother Immaculata turns to leave and nods for Simone to follow. They walk together to Simone’s room; Mother Immaculata lingers at Simone’s door.
M.I. [sincerely] Simone, dear. While Annabelle Tillman has demonstrated an unnatural devotion to you, you have never conducted yourself with anything but the utmost decorum. I was wrong to let Catherine’s imagination run away with me. [deep sigh] Will you accept my apology?
Simone: [smiling weakly] Of course.
Chapter 9
Reception after Graduation ceremony.
Kristen, Annabelle and Colins are talking together. In the background, Simone is surrounded by sisters, parents, a couple of students and Mother Immaculata. It’s obvious that they are saying good-bye to her, as they are offering hugs and handshakes.
Kristin: Annabelle, thank you so much for putting in a good word for me with your mom. I’m so excited about interning in her office this summer. I can hardly believe it!
Annabelle: I think it’ll be great for you. And don’t even thank me. It’s the least I could do. Colins, did you get everything worked out with the humane shelter for this summer?
