Home less or more – (Chapter: Chapter 1: Snow)

It was so beautiful outside. All the rooftops and trees were covered in white. I loved the snow. Ever since I was a little girl. I used to beg my parents to go outside and play and after ten thousand layers of cloth they finally let me. I saw a family walking hand in hand they were smiling to each other. They all had blond hair and matching wool hats. I laughed at that. They probably knew how ridicules they looked. But then again why care when you are so happy… I wasn’t laughing any more.

I looked down at my belly and put my hand on it. We have been trying to have a baby for a month now… I suggested it. I thought it will bring back something to our marriage… to me… I mean, something was always missing for me, and I hoped a baby will fill that… that hole in me that longed to be mend.

"Spencer!" I heard a shout from another room and headed there.

"What are you doing?" I said as I entered. Witnessing the mess that was once my kitchen; flour and dishes everywhere, smoke from the oven… and in the middle of it all, my supposedly better half, standing smiling like a child being caught trying to steal the candy jar.

"I was trying to make a pie…" I couldn’t hold it any more. I started laughing so hard…

After a while I was finally able to talk.

"Oh baby you are so bad at this… I told you leave it to me." I went to the stove to turn it off.

"Yea but I wanted to surprise you… to cheer you up…" I smiled getting up after making sure no damage has been caused.

"Aiden," I said putting my arms around him. "It’s o.k. we’ll keep trying and it’ll happen soon. I have this feeling something is going to change." He smiled and kissed me reassured.

"Now, let’s clean this mess and go for a walk in the snow."

The air was so cool and clean the sun was turning red. It was my favorite time of the day. I remembered our wedding day that was also in the twilight. Has it been a year already? God… so much has changed. I never thought I will end up here; a photographer in New York City, married to the most popular guy in school, planning a family. It was so conventional… maybe these feeling are catching up with me and that’s the reason I’m like this. My mom says it’s normal… I look at my husband and cuddle closer to him in our embrace. I breath in, ummm the snow… it’s full of possibilities, new starts. I notice a homeless girl on the steps of some building ahead and I once again remember to have thing in proportions… and that the snow is not a wonderful thing to everyone.

"Aiden do you have some money on you?" I ask him. He saw her too and smiled at me. As we got closer to her I could see she was covered with old rages one of them was a military coat, I could tell because my brother Glen joined the army three years ago. I almost don’t get to see him but when I do he is wearing the same cote even though he don’t have too… he says it makes him look cool.

I take the money from Aiden and go up the steps to give it to her as he waits for me.

"There you go." I put the money in the cup in front of her. She doesn’t say anything and her head is dropped. I was about to leave but I turned my head as I kept walking down… I don’t know why I did that… she noticed how much money it was and raised her head to see who would do such a thing.  I smile, then I meet her eyes. I knew these eyes, it was only a second and the she looked down again, but I felt so strongly about that girl suddenly. I was about to go up again.

"That was a good thing you did Spence." Aiden said, grabbing my arm so we can continue our walk. "Ye… yea…" I stuttered trying to look back at the girl but she was gone…
