    Spencer gets a surprise.

    “Hi!” I greeted, trying to seem cheerful.

    “Ashley! Wow, this is quite a surprise,” her mother replied. I had never seen her look at me with any other emotion but pure contempt, so it was kind of a shock to see she really was genuinely happy to see me. She rose from the table and gave me the first real hug she’s ever given me. Well, this was going to be quite the experience. “When did you arrive?”

    “I got in really late… or, really early this morning, depending how you look at it.”

    “Well, I’m glad you’re here,” she said. Another first.

    We talked easily for the rest of the meal, choosing such light topics as the weather, my performance on a talk-show the other week, and the Lakers (Ben’s choice) and the easy flow of conversation lasted the length of the ride to the treatment center. There wasn’t really any direct dialogue between Spencer and I; in fact, she didn’t really say much at all. She looked more and more nervous with each passing moment and it, in turn, was making me nervous for her.

    The first part of this treatment would require surgery, and Paula would have to be given general anesthesia for it; I don’t think it was life-threatening, but from what I had read, it did seem to be complicated and long. Feeling like it wasn’t my place to intrude, I remained in the waiting room while Ben and Spencer went in to her room to wish her luck. I began to think about Spencer. Maybe it was just a self-fulfilling prophecy, but it seemed like she still wanted to be with me and I believed that she felt remorse for her actions. I just hoped that I wasn’t holding her back; I wanted her to be with me because she loved me, not because she was worried about what I’d do without her. I was stirred from my thoughts by the sound of Spencer’s light sobs. Ben was leading her back into the waiting room and she looked terrified. I shot up from my seat and met her halfway, enveloping her in a hug and allowing her to cry into my shoulder. She grasped onto me like her life depended on it.

    23. I personally think that Ashley forgave Spencer to easily…but I think I know why. Could it be that Ashley’s in a hurry to get Spencer back to the hotel room so they can have table top clearing sex and expel their pent up sexual energy? I mean, not that I’m pushing for that to happen next chapter. I for one would be completely happy if Spencer and Ashley went back to the hotel room and played Scrabble (hmm, if I continue to tell myself this I just might start to believe it). Go ahead girls, ride that bed off into the sunset! Please, someone pray that I’ll get my hormones under control in this millennium. Respect to Paula for being the bigger person and acknowledging that the way she treated Ashley was wrong. Your chapters still rock, Kozmic. Please post soon!
