    Hgggnnn…..Huh? …………Oh god…..Ummm…..Spence I’m sorry , I fell asleep with the tape recorder on ………And, uh…….I had a dream about you…

    We were riding in a car. I don’t know whose car. I was driving. It was a convertible….The wind was in your hair and…..you were alive Spence. It just seemed so real, I could touch you….Hear your laughter, and the strangest part….the hardest part… Was that it was you today, not in the past. You were still alive ….Today.

    Life can be so unfair Spence… I should keep going… It was Valentines Day. I remember because of what you said the night before, and of the card that came in the mail that day. Actually I’m looking at the card right now…Only you would leave a Valentine unsigned…Well I guess you did sign it in your own dorky way….With a happy face.

    Ashley held the card in her hands. It was a red heart bordered by pink lace. The paper was wrinkled with age and overuse. She carefully opened it up. In bright red marker were the words Be My Valentine, and directly underneath was the remains of a small happy face drawn in blue colored pencil.

    That was suppose to be the beginning of a perfect day Spence…..But you know my life….Bad follows good. You see, when I started out making these tapes….. I knew we were going to get to this part, Spence.. The day God took away my sunshine.

    You weren’t waking up Spence. I arrived at the hospital greeted by the sight of doctor’s and nurses rushing in and out of your room. I remember screaming at everyone trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I finally ran to the nurses station, tears streaming down my face. Nurse Carter was there, and she quietly led me into the wating room. I remember walking in and seeing your whole family. They were huddled in the corner holding hands and praying. The funny thing is I think I would have joined in, if I thought that it could save you………

    The Carlins look up, their eyes red and puffy from crying and worry. Arthur was the first to break the family circle. He walked over to Ashley, kneeled, and put his hands on her shoulders as if to steady her for the crushing news.

    1. OH my GOSH!!! This story is sooo sad. I started to cry when Ashley told the doctor to go and fix Spencer. Oh man just thinking about it again, makes me want to cry again. Great chapter and very good writing.
