    Gone

I miss you. So much. All day long I’ve had this urge to write, but nothing to say. All I have is this overwhelming feeling of missing you. Of missing your eyelashes. The way your left sneaker would squeak when you’d get excited talking about something, anything, everything while we’d be walking down the hall. The breath you’d let out when I would trace circles on the soft skin on the inside of your elbow. I miss arguing about watching American Idol and knowing I’d lose. I miss you, and I miss us.

We are no more. There is no us. Now there is you. Now there is me. Now there is someone else you love. Someone else you smile for, someone else you think of, someone else whose favorite song you hum to cheer her up. Do you look over the menu when you’re with her at a restaurant and try and figure out what she’ll want before she knows, too? Do you send her text messages in the morning with paragraphs about what you dreamt last night, too? Do you tell her you love her, too?

My mom tells me to snap out of it. As if you are something I can snap out of. We get into arguments because she thinks I’m being melodramatic. Of course I’m being melodramatic. How do you get your heart ripped out of your chest, thrown onto a dirty floor, and stomped on without it being melodramatic? First loves, my mother says, come and go. First loves, my mother says, are rarely worth obsessing over at the time, and never after the fact. How would she know anything about the love we had? She says there’s a reason why first rhymes with worst. I say there’s a reason why she’s not a professional poet.

I miss you. So much. But the thing that kills me the most, that tears me up inside, that keeps me awake breathing shallow breaths as I stare at the ceiling and remember what it felt like to have you next to me, is that I know. I can feel it. You miss me too.
