From Spangs to Spashley – (Chapter: Chapter Eight)

“It’s cool,” responded Ashley. We all know that Glen is an idiot. Spencer chuckled.

“Yeah,” Spencer agreed. So you had something you needed to tell me, Ash. It’s time to find out whether or not Glen is right.

“Yes, there is,” said Ashley rather nervously. Spencer took Ashley’s hands in her own and Ashley began, “H-how long have we known each other?”

“For nine…no, ten years,” Spencer replied. Wow, that’s a long time.

“Yep,” agreed Ashley. Those ten years being your best friend…

The waitress returned with Ashley’s water. “Are you ready to order now?” the waitress asked.

“Could you please give us a second?” sighed Ashley.

“Sure,” the waitress responded. The waitress turned away and then turned back. Your second is up. Ashley glared at the waitress. Uh… you’re not that kind of table. The waitress walked away.

“So what were you saying?” asked Spencer.

    “I’m not sure,” Ashley answered.

“Okay, well you had asked me how long we had known each other, and I said, “Ten years,” explained Spencer. And the um, waitress came over and cut her tip in half, and umm…now here we are.

“Right,” Ashley responded. For ten years, we’ve been best friend and don’t get me wrong I don’t know where I would be without you or your friendship. The thing is I can’t just be your best friend anymore. Spencer sighed and released Ashley’s hands. But you don’t feel the same way.

“Look, I’m not going to lie to you,” began Spencer. There were things I felt when I was around you that I never felt when I was with Carmen, ever.

“Were?” asked Ashley in a choked up voice.

“I moved on,” Spencer answered simply.

“Why couldn’t you tell me how you felt?” asked Ashley in tears.

“The same reason you didn’t tell me,” Spencer answered. Glen told me that I was the girl that you liked and I didn’t understand why you couldn’t tell me, but I thought back and saw that we did the same thing. I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you. We were going on different roads. I was still discovering my sexual orientation while you were off with some girl. The girls would just leave the way they came and I was afraid you’d the same to me.

“I would never do that to you,” stated Ashley. You mean so much more to me than a one night stand. I’m in l-love with you, Spencer.

    “You are?” Spencer asked stunned.

“Yeah, I am,” answered Ashley. So you don’t have feelings for me anymore a-at all?

“I had to push back the feelings I had for you to back of my mind so I could try being your best friend,” Spencer explained.

“Is that why you dated Bangs?” asked Ashley with a sigh.

“She was someone who actually noticed me and she made a move,” Spencer answered. You never did and it seemed like we were never getting anywhere. Sure, she treated me like crap, but I didn’t have to worry about winding up alone.

“I always noticed you,” began Ashley. I never felt like I was good enough for you. You’re a special girl, Spence and you deserve the world, not a screw up like me.

“Now it’s just too late for us,” Spencer responded with a sigh. Tears were streaming down Ashley’s cheeks.

“Don’t say that,” said Ashley. Spencer got up and hugged Ashley.

“I’m sorry, but I have to go,” Spencer replied.

“We’ll find a way to be together, baby,” pleaded Ashley. Please give me a chance, give us a chance. Ashley kissed Spencer very sweetly on the lips. Spencer stopped the kiss.

“It’s not fair to you that you have more feelings for me than I do for you,” Spencer stated.

“Wait, you still have feelings for me?” asked Ashley with curiosity.

“Over the last couple of weeks, I began to realize I was never over you,” Spencer explained. We’ll get past this, I promise. We could be friends again. Spencer wiped Ashley’s tears away.

“I don’t want to be your friend,” responded Ashley. I need to be more with you. It’s all or nothing.

“I’m sorry, but it’ll have to be nothing then,” Spencer sighed. Goodbye, Ashley. Spencer left Ashley alone in the restaurant and Ashley broke down into more tears.
