Complexities – (Chapter: Dibs)
School has been completely boring. I haven’t even caught a glimpse of Glen or Spencer. At first I thought it was because they were avoiding me… but when Spencer’s name was called for two of my classes and Glens name was called for one, I realized that they maybe just weren’t there that day. But it seems like everyone else has noticed me. And I mean everyone. I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing but everyone is staring at me. It’s uncomfortable. I’m just glad that the bell is about to ring in like 2 minutes. 2 more minutes and I’ll be free. I’ll be able to go home, lay in bed and listen to the Doors. Maybe I’ll even go for another jog. One more minute left. A large brawny boy with short curly hair begins to walk in my general direction, his eyes scanning over me. When he notices that I see him, he gives a friendly smile.
“Are you uhmm…” he pauses and tills his head a little bit, “Ashley?”
I look around, even though I know who asked the question “Um… yeah?”
He hands me a piece of paper and walks away as the bell rings. Awkward. In fact, every contact I have had with anyone has been awkward. Quickly I gather my things and walk out of the building, waiting till I’m halfway home to open the note.
Ashley,
Sorry we weren’t there like we said we would be. Some things came up and we had to say home. If you would like to though, you can come hang out after school. If you can’t hang don’t worry about telling us. We’ll just see you tomorrow at school. We both hope we see you soon. Oh, and don’t forget your swim stuff if you can come!
Spencer
P.S. Jaks welcome to come.
Should I stay, or should I go? The song plays in my head as I walk into the doorway and into my freezing cold house.
“ASHLEY?!” an unwanted voice shouts “ASHLEY ARE YOU THERE?!” I walk into the living room and see him attempting to get off of the couch.
“Yeah dad I’m here.” I say while slipping my shoes off.
“CLOSE THE FUCKING DOOR!” he yells. I don’t think he even sees me.
“It’s closed dad.”
“NO.” he gets up and stumbles around.
“Yeah it is.” I just continue to walk up stairs.
“Ashley… can you do me a favor?” I pause on my step, even though I know by now that listening to what he wants me to do will only make me sad, “What dad?”
“Can you show me which door leads to my room?”
“Find it yourself dad.” I know I shouldn’t of asked. “I’m going out.”
“Can you at least pick up some Captain?!”
“No!” I yell and close my door.
It’s been this way ever since he and mom split. He hasn’t stopped drinking since his golden boy chose the other parent. He’s always favored Ashton over me. You should of seen how upset he was the first night he found out he got me not him. I tried my best to earn his approval but I gave up about a month ago after I got caught stealing alcohol for him. It’s not worth it anymore. It’s not even worth getting upset about anymore.
I slip on my bathing suit and pull my hair up. “Jak Jak!” she runs into my room and jumps onto my bed. “Do you wanna go see some friends?!” her little head bobbed up and down as I grabbed her brush. I don’t want too much dog hair in her pool if she happens to jump in.
“Bye” I whisper as I rush downstairs. I lock up the house that way no one will break in and I take off running down the street, hoping Jak remembers the way.
