Cheer Me Up Thank You – (Chapter: 2)

I fumbled around in my handbag, trying to find my ringing phone as I stood in the long line at Starbucks. I could tell the old lady in front of me was getting irritated by the ringing, she kept looking over her shoulder and at one point I swore she rolled her eyes.

Finally I spared her any further torment and found it.

    "Hello?"

"Mrs. Dennison?" A formal female voice invaded my ears. "This is Spencer Carlin, Glen Carlin’s sister?"

"The lawyer? Yes, Hi." I replied before cupping my hand over the phone and ordering a coffee. "I’m assuming this isn’t a social call."

She laughed politely; "Not as such, no. I wanted to arrange a meeting with you in order to discuss all of the legal details in the divorce with Aiden… er Mr. Dennison. I know it’s short notice but are you free tomorrow at three?"

"I’ll make sure I’m free," I replied sincerely. "I’d like this all to be as quick and easy as possible. Aiden deserves that much."

"I have no reason to think it will be hard for either party Mrs. Dennison."

"Ashley. Ashley is easier." She gave me the details for the meeting and we said our goodbyes.

… Then I got my coffee.

Spencer Carlin’s office was modest in comparison to the overly elegant façade of the legal building it was in. There weren’t really any personal items in the office bar a coffee mug which read ‘Happy 25th Birthday Spencer… Aren’t you glad we got you this great present?’ Which meant I really didn’t have anything to go on as I waited patiently for her to arrive.

Truthfully, it made me a little nervous.

    "Mrs. Denn-… Ashley?"

I stood up and turned around to find a woman about my age, a little taller than me, with blonde hair and a friendly smile. She also had very faint circles under her eyes, and it occurred to me that perhaps she didn’t really have the time to take on Aiden and my divorce. Cue that guilty sensation again.

"Hi, it’s nice to meet you Ms Carlin," I said as I shook her hand politely and sat back down. "Thank you for taking our case onboard. I hope it hasn’t inconvenienced you?"
