Cheaters Never Prosper – (Chapter: One- Putting The Heat In Cheat)
“I don’t know what you expect me to do.” Ashley responded finally, staring at her hands. She hated not comforting the girl and felt like shit for being so cold, but in her own defense Spencer had been doing this dance for months. She wants more, she wants less. She wants more, she wants less. The only way to keep from becoming a human yoyo was to just stay less.
Spencer looked up at Ashley, those blue eyes wide as saucers and just bleeding hurt, “I don’t know… I just…” She stopped herself and stood up, moving towards the front door.
“Wait, your leaving?” Suddenly the girl was concerned, rising abruptly to her feet.
“Look… I got scared and for whatever reason my head just told me to come here. But obviously you don’t want to see me, so I’m just going to go.” Spencer turned, squeezing the handle and pulling the door open. Her stomach was a collection of knots, the sick feeling of rejection settling in her chest cavity.
“No, wait. That’s not it at all, Spencer stay here.” Pleaded the brunette, her hand outstretching, “I’m sorry for being a jerk, I want you here with me. Safe. Okay?”
Spencer hesitated in the doorway, her shoulders tensed as she contemplated her options. When a cold gust of wind pelted her bare face she took it as a sign and finally shut the door. Eventually she turned around, finding her way back to the couch and taking her seat once more, “Okay.”
Ashley shifted closer to Spencer and wrapped her arm around her thin shoulders. She felt immensely guilty the moment the blondes entire body seemed to exhale and melt into her side, reminding her just how frail the girl could be. Resting her chin atop the girl’s blonde head she sighed, her voice soft but hinting at just a bit of concern, “Hey Spence… Mr. Homicidal Husband… He doesn’t know where I live, does he?”
“…I don’t think so.” The girl replied, her brows furrowing, “I don’t even know how he found out.”
“Maybe he hired a private detective or something. Remember the other day? When I told you I thought I saw some guy taking a picture of us? I could have sworn I saw someone in a car with a camera…” Ashley spoke, sounding a bit more worried. If the guy hired a private detective, it wouldn’t have been hard to figure out where she lived.
