A Working Class Sacrifice
14 Years before Present Day
Tina stood on the brilliantly manicured lawn and stared up at the home that would be hers in just one week. One week, and she would be walking down the aisle towards a man whom she might not ever love. Her reservations regarding this marriage lay like dead weight, hindering her impetus towards the future.
How could so much have changed so quickly? In one year’s time, Tina had been wrenched from the woman she loves, moved in with a father she hadn’t seen in years, and had been courted in earnest by a man who would soon become her husband. The kind of soon that drops anchor in seven days.
Tina watched as John tipped the movers, thanking them for their help. They had spent the weekend moving into their new home, the home that they had recently picked out together. Tina had always considered house-hunting to be a laborious and long-winded event, but not so for those without a cap on their spending. They had found a house they both liked within the first day, and John wrote a check. It was as easy as that.
Once the moving van had pulled out of their large, circular driveway, John approached Tina and slid his arm over her shoulder. Together, they looked up at the phlegmatic face of their new home.
“Well,” John said, “this is home.”
“Yeah. Home,” Tina said quietly. It didn’t feel right on her tongue. In fact, it felt like a cortical misunderstanding, where the word ‘home’ and its visual accompaniment were a square peg and a round hole. She had done her utter best to be brave and embrace the situation that she could not avoid. This was her life now.
“I’m really glad you decided to come live with your dad, Tina,” John said sincerely, turning to look at her.
“Well you were very persistent,” Tina joked.
“I know, I just… I’ve had a crush on you since I was a little kid,” John admitted, a blush slightly marking his face. “When I saw you again, it all kind of came flooding back. I just wanted the chance to date you.”
“And now here we are, about to get married,” Tina said.

I love this story. I’m wondering how Tina’s mother is doing and if she feels guilty for playing a part in their separation?
